Excellent tip, but doesn't that presuppose you do your comparisons on a comparison website and then follow up with a visit to this site? Just wondering for the next time I change, although not in mind to do so for a while yet.
Octopus is one of the fairer suppliers, they offer lower price tariffs to the comparison sites like they all do, but they don't stop their existing customers from moving to those tariffs once they are a customer.
So you can get the best of both worlds with a bill credit from a referral then switch to one of the 'exclusive' tariffs once you are there.
You can check all for their available tariffs here: https://octopus.energy/tariffs/
No exit fees from their tariffs either, so if a cheaper one comes along in a few weeks or months you just call or email and they move you over.

MWT you mentioned earlier "get a referral link from the correct group on here" Another forumite very kindly did PM a referral link but unfortunately I wasn't sure it was it was legit? Is this what you meant by correct group on here?

You need to look at the referrers board on here; that is where people are allowed to post links on the MSE forum.
Some offer to give you half of the referrers credit they receive, as a bonus!

It is against the rules on here to offer or advertise a referral link outside of the referrers group, but that does stop people trying to go around the system unfortunately.

Is this something that can still be done? I can find a tariff here cheaper than what I can get on their website. Does that mean I would need to change through their website with a referral and then come here and use the one from the comparison site?

How you end up with them doesn't really matter, you can switch to them in any of the usual ways, or you can sign up directly with them, with or without a referral, but once you are a customer you can ask them to move you to one of the other current tariffs that they offer.
For example, Tracker, Go & Agile are all tariffs available to existing customers that you cannot switch to directly.
Similarly, as an existing customer I was able to ask them to move me to one of the exclusive tariffs for my gas while having my electric on Agile.
Since then I've moved my gas to 3 different exclusive tariffs, each lower than the previous one.
At the moment the gas tariffs have been going up, so I'm not likely to be changing it again for now.

  • I've been with Octopus, electricity-only & been very happy with them all that time.  I regularly compare them for my Economy 7-intensive use and they always come out tops on price, green credentials and most of all, Customer Service.  Though their unit prices & bills have always been correct, I was chuffed to bits when they did a review of what I'd paid over the four years: nett result nearly £700 credited to my balance and no qualms upon my asking to withdraw that back into my bank.  You'd be daft NOT to use them imho...!

I'm considering switching to Octopus Energy but I read a couple of comments from customers of Octopus stating they were unhappy with the billing method./system and thought I would investigate. They did not prepare a straightforward bill showing the amount of energy used that month but something about an annual estimate & deducting monthly usage from that. It sounded complicated, I have selected a 1 year fixed price tariff but will want to check the accuracy of billing each month. Is there anything complicated about their billing system.  When my old style dials meter needs changing will they try and persuade me to have a smart meter.

They issue a statement everytime a meter reading is given - https://octopus.energy/blog/why-we-dont-send-monthly-statements/  straightforward statement of energy used.
They are only installing Smart Meters for people who want them ( Currently suspended due to Covid19), "old style dials meter needs changing",  if it does there may/may not be same type of meter replacements available, outcome at that time should it occur I would have thought be same whoever the energy supplier is.

Thanks for replying.  So they don't deduct the statement amount from an annual estimate.
As to the dials style meter I would not want another one. I just want a straightforward digital style meter.
