he did supply one months bank statment but they want more!

Normally DWP want a years worth of bank account statements for all bank accounts a claimant has.
  • they never asked for that! they dont make things clear to people they just asked him for a bank statement, not how many? how how many months back
  • I think you need to tone down the semi hysterical, slightly aggressive responses. People are trying to offer assistance and advice and your attitude won't help. I appreciate dealing with the DWP is frustrating but taking it out on forum members isn't productive in the least.

It's been made clear that your friend needs to provide letters proving that the only figure mentioned was £16k. As the DWP documentation (websites and letters) makes it clear the lower amount is £6k he needs to prove that their letters didn't say that. Personally, I think he (and you?) have misread it.

He also needs to provide bank statements. As he has produced one - and it's not enough - call and ask how many they need.

£22 a week is very generous by DWP standards, e.g. people on JSA with NO savings have to pay back 2/3 of their JSA.

Hi OP- yes it's not nice that someone made a false accusation about your friend. But regardless- an overpayment has been identified and that has to be recovered. They are being good in only wanting £22 per week , they could ask for a lot more or ask for the full amount from his savings.

Moving forward.... It would be prudent to get your friends family/advocate/support worker to ensure that his circumstances are correct & up to date for any benefit he receives to avoid anything like this happening in the future.

If he is also in receipt of housing benefit or council tax reduction you just contact the local authority to declare his savings. They will also require bank statements.
Please be nice to all moneysavers!
