Interesting, I'm pretty sure the road itself is council owned as it has council street name signs on it, the garage block area I was exiting is definitely RA owned though. As you say, it has no high vis markings or anything on it, plus being on a corner means you basically can't see it at all as you go around.

Doesn't matter. It could have been a sleeping elephant and it'd still be your fault. You've got windows and brakes for a reason. If you can't see round the corner then slow right down or stop and have a look.

Perhaps, but then EdGasket has highlighted a very similar situation where he did successfully claim.

Parked cars are more than 1ft high and thus very easy to see. I didn't know specsavers now sell glasses that allow you to see through the interior of your car.

Grit bins are usually more than 1ft as well.

The bottom line is you can't claim from the council because you were negligent. You knew the object was there but you misjudged the distance.

There's a big difference. You knew the bin was there!

That bin was on a public highway without proper marking; there's actual laws covering it, for a specific reason.

Your bin was at the side of a private car park.

It's not in the car park, it's in the road. It also has no proper markings.

As I said, I can post a photo later when I get home. I wouldn't post a link to where I live anyway, but regardless it's not on google maps because it has only been there for about 9 months and the streetview predates that.

You'll need to show us pictures. But if this bin has been there for a long time, and no-one has complained (or hit it), then you're wasting your time. Should this bin be coned off and light according to the Road Traffic Act?

The only thing this story has in common with the referenced one is the word "bin".

I have heard it costs a lot to repair the doors on some vehicles.

BMW M3, Audis and Toyota Yaris seem to be the worst. I am in the dark as to why the Yaris is a expensive to repair as an M3 but it's a matter of fact apparently.

Because a new poster started a thread on Internet forum and said so, and people don't make up wild stories on the Internet.
