I am curious to check that (or when) I am actually ovulating.

I was advised by a fertility specialist not to waste money on any kind of ovulation predicting thingys. He said the best advice he would give anyone who is ttc would be to have sex regularly. Its best to have sex every 2-3 days. Any sooner (i.e everyday) and the sperm won't be of good quality as it hasn't had time to develop properly but leaving it any later than 3 days and the sperm is dying/dead.

Not a lot of good if you're not ovulating though! We'd still be trying 8 years on

I understand that but honeypop didn't say she wasn't ovulating, she just doesn't know when. Had she said she wasn't ovulating I wouldn't have given the advice.

my specialist advised not to waste money buying such things. I have had several blood tests to confirm if I am ovulating or not. The doctor has said that not everyone ovulates each and every month….I would advise not to start introducing kits and tests and stuff into your relationship as they just pile on the pressure.

Thanks guys, I do want to check that I AM actually ovulating, as I said. Yes we are having regular sex, not for babymaking but we just do anyway, however as Strapped says – no good if you’re not ovulating! I understand the basics of trying for a baby in that regular sex is the way to go, I didn’t just dream up the idea of wanting one and only trying on the days I’m ovulating!!

Shelly I appreciate your doctor told you that everyone ovulates every month, however mine says different and that it is possible for various reasons that some ladies do not, which is why I want to check. My sister had similar problems although it seemed to sort itself out in the end.

I don’t want to introduce the testing to use every month so we can ‘do it’ when I’m ovulating, I simply want to check that it is happening and not start to worry over it. The reason for using a simple kit to check is so that I don’t waste doctors time if it turns out everything is as it should be. If it turns out to be inconclusive then to see the doctor is my next step anyway, until then I want to remain stress free over it and just wanted to check it out, out of curiosity.

Thanks everyone for the response x
  • Honeypop, the simplest, and cheapest way to know, is to take your temperature at the same time each morning, first thing. If you log these temperatures on a simple line chart, you will see a distinct peak if you ovulate. You'll know after a month what's going on.

I ovulate around the 14th day of my cycle, but everyone's different.

  • My wife was trying to get pregnant for about 3 years and then we went on holiday to Egypt and got talking to another couple who she said that she had taken clomid, (think that is how you spell it) and the lady we spoke to got pregnant straight away. My wife went off to the chemist in Egypt and bought some and when she got home started taking it. Within about two months she found out that she was pregnant.

She could not believe it when she got pregnant.

Now got one of each I do not want anymore!!

Clomid is prescription only, wouldn't want to take it without a doc saying so!

    1) I'm sorry if by my previous post about regular sex you thought I was either being funny or stating the obvious but not alot of women know not to do it everyday. I personally didn't know not to do it everyday and was surprised to be told to do it only every 2-3 days.

    2) Actually my doctor didn't tell me that women ovulate every month. He said that not every woman ovulates each and every month.

    3) If you do use ovualting kits and get an inconclusive result doctors won't intervene until you have been trying for 18 months to 2 years. Or at least where I live they won't. After my first loss I didn't get any blood tests done until we had been trying for 18 months. I got positive results but as the doctor said, all that proves is that I ovulated that month.

Anyway, good luck and best wishes.

  • Hello to you all

I have a 7month old son, we tried to conceive for 3 years,so i know exactly what your all going through. I dont have any answers but wanted to share my experince with you all.

I was given a book, called trying to conceive, which was really useful. I found out my cycle was 25 days not 28, so we were missing the window, so to speak with conception. This fact i never knew about, i always assumed cycles were 28 days long.

I had blood tests etc to check i was ovulating and i was, i also had an appointment to have exploritive tests in hospital as my age was against me (im 36 now). I felt like a failure, and it toke over my life completely.

I however fell pregnant naturally, the ironic thing was i found out on the tuesday and got my appointment through on the wednesday for my tests.

My doctor was fantastic, really supportive and helpful, but i know not all are. If youve been trying for a long time, i would strongly suggest you ask for the tests i was going to have, as they will show any problems you may have.

    I hope ive helped abit,

Because I was in my mid 30s, my GP referred me after 8 months. It's worth pursuing if you are that bit older.
    The IVF worked;DS born 2006.

It's a year where we lived, or 6 months if you are 35+.
