  • Hi,

Although I'm not ttc yet, I'm hoping to within the next year/2 years, and I was just wondering what I'v done to my body :(

My doctor persuaded me to have the Depo Inj in June 07, I then had a period in the Aug for 2 weeks (sorry, its a bit too much info next) but it wasn't a propper period, it was just dark meucus, then I had another in Nov for 2 weeks, still meucus stuff, then I had one last week for one week, with 5days meucus and 2 day blood, is this normal? I don't know anyone else on the Depo that have had this kind of trouble, up until I had the Depo, I was regular as clockwise? My Doc just shrugged it off and said it was fine, but I'm not 100% convinced?

Any Advice would be grately appreciated

    Hi gigglebunny.

Usually my periods start off with at least 2-3 days of what I call "dirty brown stuff", looks like old blood. Then I get 4-5 days of bleeding then a day or 2 of brown stuff again.
Have spoken to my doctor about it and 2 fertility doctors and all 3 said it was ok. Nothing to worry about.

I admit to knowing nothing about the depo inj but sounds to me like 2 periods of mucus with no blood but last period had blood......maybe your periods are righting themselves?

It won't hurt for you to get a second opinion if you are still worried.

I was like this for ages after having the depo, personally I wouldnt have it again, it took 18months for my periods to setlle into a normal monthy (red!) cycle, for ages its was a few days of brown discharge as a period and sorry if tmi was really lumpy blood with clots n stuff, def wasnt a pregnany or anything because we were really careful.

If I were you I would come off it now and just use condoms until ready to conceive, you should be back to normal by the time your ready in 1-2 years. Its frustrating isnt it because the doctors/nurses never told me about any of these side effects.

    Hi gigglebunny

Like Shelly says, it does sound like maybe they are sorting themselves out...a friend of mine went on the depo and it took her a year and a half for hers to return to normal. ie regular cycle and regular colour, consistancy etc....She spoke to two doctors about it 1 male and 1 female both said it can take up to 2 years to return to normal...neither seemed worried at all.

Although this was all a few years ago so i'm not sure what current medical advice would be regarding this, maybe wait until next cycle and then if it is still the same go to the doctors straight away.

  • Thanks for all the replies, and jakesmummy, i only had the one in june, didnt go back for my next one as I put on a stone in 2 weeks straight after and my doctor went bright red and confessed that as I struggle with my weight (I exercise and eat healthy, its just something I struggle hard with to control) he probably shouldnt of given me the Depo as weight gain is a side effect (I read it increases your appetite?)

I think my periods are starting to sort themselves out, didn't read too much into the side effects/problems of Depo before getting it, as I should of done

    Thank you all again

AF came today. Good and heavy, good and painful. I wasn't expecting it until Sunday, so that was a bit of a surprise, but after last month I definately rather it a little early than a little late. It means it's all the sooner till we can try next time! :D

Thanks to all who have wished me well, am really scared about my appointment on monday, we need IVF as my other half has poor motilility and morphology, bit of a shock as we thought it would just happen, we are not entitled to any help on NHS as I have 2 kids from a previous relationship, so to save money and to help others we are going down the egg share route, will let you know how we get on xx
