Assuming Turkey is allowed to join the EU in October as is being discussed at present.
What will the impact be on the UK economy? Seems strange to me that our goverment can agree to decisions like this without a vote or asking us.
Have they considered the economic ramifications ? If so, and considered the deal will either be good or neutral to the economy then surely they should be letting us know? I am concerned about them joining because I have no facts for the implactions for the UK. The other worrying thing aside from the economy is Turkey share a border with Syria and Iraq, and I have read 5000 ISIS fighters have already used the migrant tide to place themselves in Europe. So if they do join, will we get strickter borders at turkey to prevent ISIS? Seems so odd they can make a massive decision like this so lightly and so little facts out for us regular people.
Thoughts on Turkey joining? Negatives and postitives for UK....What are they? looking for balanced opinions please.

Turkey is not joining the EU in October.
This is not being discussed at present.
There will be no impact on the UK.
Britain will retain all the same controls over it's borders for Turkish citizens after October as it does today.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

Where did you hear that Turkey is joining the EU, John?
Turks will gain a right to visa free travel to within the Schengen zone next year, but we are not in Schengen. Everything else is up for negotiation, as it has been for many years. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? My post was assuming Turkey joined the EU in October or sometime in the very near future. Turkey joining the EU is very much being discussed as they are being fast tracked with the migrant deal they have just struck- the official date it will happen is up for debate of course - my question was the impact on the uk economy. We have mctavish thinks it will have no impact on the economy, which is fine. Any other opinions? If allowed in will it impact our NHS public services etc?
Quote from PM
David Cameron has spoken about Turkey, making his first official visit as Prime Minister to Ankara - where he said: "I'm here to make the case for Turkey's membership of the EU. And to fight for it"
Plans to ease access to the EU for Turkish citizens will be speeded up, with a view to allowing visa-free travel by June 2016

Why would you assume that when the best estimates are a decade or more?my question was the impact on the uk economy. We have mctavish thinks it will have no impact on the economy, which is fine. Any other opinions? If allowed in will it impact our NHS public services etc?
If they did get in it would be very good for the UK economy - another country of 75m people in the EU would increase demand for exports of our goods and services to the single market - but they're not getting in any time soon.Plans to ease access to the EU for Turkish citizens will be speeded up, with a view to allowing visa-free travel by June 2016
Access to the Schengen Visa zone.
Which we are not part of.
There will be no change to Turkish visa requirements to enter the UK.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

If Turkey's entry to the EU would be good for UK economy as it is a market of 75million, then one assumes you have the integrity to acknowledge that the anti- trade policy of the EU is currently harming the UK.
Better we leave the EU and trade freely with Turkey now and gain all the benefits that you think will accrue.0 -
Thanks Mctavish. Well if your correct and it will benefit the UK then I am all for it.
Seems to me its a question of when not if they join. Especially now they are being fast tracked for helping out with the migrant crisis.
But its reassuring to know when they do it will be good for the economy and have no impact on us controlling our borders.0 -
As Turkey is apparently not a safe country (along with all the other countries between Turkey and France) is it wise for it to join the EU?0

Surely there will be provisions in place to only allow safe people visa free access so that alleaviates that worry.
And the 75m is a massive plus for the UK economy, I am all for something that makes great britain better and more wealthy.0 -

Yes visa system involves more limitations and checks than an open border.
"Safe people" are a matter of opinion. The US visa system includes a self declaration in the form of "Have you ever committed genocide?".Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0
