  • Selement, I got moaned at for getting carried away quickly, I’d like to think I’ve relaxed a bit now.
I’ve done opks and I track them and bd on an app but I don’t temp or anything else.
Feb will be two years since I stopped my pill so I’d like to think I’m resigning myself to if it happens it happens.

I just use apps and opk too, don't temp. I think basically he's happy for it to happen but doesn't want to really know about things which is difficult for me because he's my best friend and I tell him everything. He did get a little like this about wedding planning though - I think he's happy for these things to happen if he doesn't have to think about them too much!

  • KatieBee – We are saving to move house, so all our money is going towards that at the moment. I don’t necessarily feel that we need to save for a baby. I know we will manage and adjust our budgets according to our income at the time. We have saved an awful lots of money in the last 18 months for our wedding and then moving house. I am very good with budgeting and we have no debts, so I’m not too worried. Childcare costs wise it will be what it is. We have no family local to help, so we would have to pay childcare for any days I go back to work. I hope to go back 4 days, but when the time comes I will work out childcare costs vs net wage for 3,4 and 5 days.

Celepie – we do like to send ourselves mental doing things like that don’t we? I think it is impossible not to be tempted though! Fingers crossed it is a faint line for you. Did you retest today?

    CD1 :( ah well.

We haven't really saved. I only work part time just now as DD is only 19 months. She does 3 days at nursery as we have no family close by. I'm not saving specifically for maternity as I coped okay on SMP last time and DH gets a great wage. We are quite lucky.
  • Good luck for the retesting Celepie! How exciting for you!

  • Thanks for all your views on the savings aspect side of things, I’ve heard if you wait til you can afford it you’ll never be able to. I just hate the uncertainty I guess :( but what will be will be, I suppose once there is news to share people will give me their views and what worked for them so I’ll wait until there is something to plan ahead for before I drive myself crazy just now!!

Toots - sorry to hear AF arrived :( xx

I think it suggests somewhere on MSE to live on your average maternity leave pay during pregnancy - save the money and can put that towards baby purchases.
My understanding is babies don't cost very much the main problem is loss of income if working less and childcare costs.
It's worth maybe having a very rough idea of you think might be affordable and save up if you need to, but childhood is a long time to save up for.

Some people end up working to make basically nothing after childcare costs but once the child is eligible for free childcare and then school etc sticking with work is more likely to have paid off.

If you can afford to save it probably is sensible to do so, we just are prioritising debt repayments instead.... if we were really stuck we could go down to minimum payments.

I think maybe puttig aside a little money where possible for the purchases you need for your first baby may be wise (pram, car seat, bed etc). Although what Selement suggests is wise too! I do actually have a bank account that I put my 'free' money in, so basically money I get from cashback sites, ebaying or car booting. I have always just let that build up without any real knowledge of how much is in there, figuring it is an (extra) emergency fund or will be for when we do have a child to do something nice that my wages may not cover, such as a day with friends or a (want rather than need) baby purchase. At the moment there is about £300 in it, so not a huge amount. I'm not adding to it really at the moment as all extra money is going toward a family holiday/car repairs needed at the minute. Talking of ebaying... I think i will head off to do some now!
