car lease company sent wrong car

This thread has become highly entertaining. I especially like the way I'm being accused of having a chip on my shoulder because my parents raised me to be grateful for gifts, especially expensive ones.
Perhaps through general use, the meaning of the word 'horrified' has somehow become diluted over the years. But not by THAT much.
Horrified means literally "filled with horror", also frightened, scared, terrified, petrified and terrorized.
Now honestly, is that reaction appropriate in an 18 year old who has just been told that the incredibly expensive and generous gift from their parents is the subject of an error and instead they will be getting a slightly less luxurious, but still incredibly expensive and generous gift? I mean, the sheer bone-chilling HORROR of it! The UN should be involved to prevent this kind of suffering, surely!
"she doesn't want to give the car back" the OP said.
That attitude, sorry to break it to you, is brattishness. Pure and simple.
Of course, anyone would be a little disappointed, that is to be expected. "Well, it's a shame, but I still have a brand new car!" is what most non-brat 18 year old kids would think, I'm pretty sure of that.
I am sure the girl wasnt literally "horrified" in the sense of your dictionary definition, but as i posed previously - and you havent answered - what if it had happened to an expensive present you bought for a child of yours or for your wife, and the company rang up six weeks later saying they wanted it back because they'd given you a better one by mistake? Would your wife and / or you not be "horrified" - for want of a better word?
I cant believe you're picking one word and basing your entire view of a child around that.
How do you know she isnt totally grateful for and proud of her parents for getting the car for her?0 -
Horrified means literally "filled with horror", also frightened, scared, terrified, petrified and terrorized.
It can also mean shocked, dismayed, thrown off balance, rattled, knocked sideways or knocked for six, among other things.
"Mark was horrified by her remarks, but said nothing"

However, if you subsitute in shocked, dismayed, thrown off balance, rattled, knocked sideways or knocked for six then your conclusion thats shes a brat falls on its !!! somewhat doesnt it?

Of course she doesnt - its her first car. A big present for her 18th Birthday, what recipient of a gift like that would go "yeah sure just take it back". I'd be more concerned if they did as it would show they didnt care about / acknowledge the value of the gift.

Not when you read it as it was no doubt intended, as opposed to how you've chosen to feel outraged by.

My son would be fairly "horrified" if i suggested swapping his car out for a lesser one, as would most balanced children who have a car i'd have thought.0 -

It's not as if it's going to be replaced with NO CAR. It's going to be replaced with the car it should have been in the first place - and, after all, if the differences are so insignificant as to not notice for six weeks...
LOL, yes, quite.
Yes, its a bit of a first world problem and i'm sure they'll all get over it but a bit much to describe her as an ungrateful brat.0 -
Wow, some people do like to jump on things don't they, Brat !!! Really ? How the hell would you know ?? maybe a should have substituted "horrified" with "extremely unhappy", then the smart people maybe wouldn't have contributed. Thanks so much for those who saw the genuine side of the post and gave a decent opinion to the smart people.
I still haven't heard back from the lease company but will no doubt post the results here, I'm certain the car will be staying with us, and yes it is a fair offer they have made, but I will be trying to improve it. Why wouldn't I ??
I obviously got a word wrong in my OP and also think I should substitute the word "people" with "!!!!!!" in this post.0 -
I blame the parents.0
