Change back to maiden name without consent

As an example, if you were born Mary Smith, you married a John Brown and became known as Mary Brown. If you wanted to change your name to Jane Black you'd need his permission but not if you went back to using your own name, Mary Smith.
There's a difference between choosing to use your own or your husband's name and changing it although we do sometimes use that expression.
thanks for this - it could help a lot. Is there anywhere that confirms this online as i will need to show it to student services who are insisting for papers.0 -
And only if you want to have the change enrolled.
I think it said some places will only accept enrolled.. But surely if my bank will do it..
I'll try my luck with the DVLA and just renew my passport with no changes as it was already in my maiden name.
Just uni then!
What about credit reference agencies??0 -

The university will want proof that the person graduating is the same person that enrolled on the course - are your entry qualifications in your own or your husband's name?0 -
Give your uni your birth cert and passport. If they don't comply kick up a stink about them dictating that married women must use their husband's name and are unable to use the name they were born with! Through in a possible complaint about sex discrimination and refusing to accept valid identification and I bet you won't have any more trouble.
When I took my husbands name bizarrely the most difficulty I had was with PayPal!Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0 -
The issue may be presenting it as a 'change of name' and the university has policies for that. It might be worth asking if they can run it through as correcting a clerical error - same result, maybe less red tape in the way.But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

I just reverted to my maiden name, showed no evidence and wrote a letter to relevant people saying that I was changing from Mrs. x to Miss Y and signed both signatures.
Permission? Really? This is the 21st century, women (in this country) are no longer goods and chattels!Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

This is why the name that will be on my degree certificate is my family name, not the combination of mine and my partners name double barrelled that I officially use. The name that will be on my degree certificate is not my 'legal' name but it's the name I want on there.*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200

Not so much keen in my case, I just thought it made sense for us all to have the same surname, plus I had no particular desire to keep the name of my birth father.
Many don't marry at all, so lots of the children with whom I work have a different surname frim their mothers, yet it is their mothers with whom I tend to deal!Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016
