Anyone else know a family where the parents are married and were when the children were born and the children have the mother's surname? The father's surname is a middle name in the case I know.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Isn't that much the same thing as double barrelling?

Not in my books, or theirs. Their surname is Jones rather than a double barrelled Russell-Jones - J alphabetically and Russell no more obvious or used than any other middle name, so most often an initial.

Yes - two couples. In both cases, the husband has nephews/nieces who have his family surname while there aren't any other children in the wife's family to take her family surname on to another generation.

When it becomes equally normal for a man to take his wife's name when they marry, this might be a relevant question but until then.....
Whilst I don't agree with the fact that many people seem to think that a woman has to take her husband's name by default, accepting that this is the case I don't see what point you are trying to make.

Are you suggesting it is some kind of trade to make things fair, i.e. a marriage results in the man's name being used and a birth results in the woman's name being used?

I had assumed you were suggesting that the mother was the "main" parent rather than the man and so where there isn't a consistent last name, the woman's is the obvious one to take. Apologies if this wasn't the case.

Just realised we did this, my maiden name was a name that you could use for a first name and it has become more and more popular over the last 30 years. We used it as a middle name for one child and it never occurred to me that someone might think it was double barrelled. I think I have gone off his name now, I'm not keen on double barrelled. How did that never occur to me?

  • Another update...!!

Even though I received the email form the courts confirming I do not need a deed poll, just my birth cert, Uni are still refusing to amend my details without deed poll or decree absolute. They have advised I make a formal complaint if I am not happy with this outcome. Which I am going to do but it looks like my HNC certificate will end up going in his name after all. It's crazy that my bank is fine to amend with birth cert but they wont! It's their policy apparently. I wish I had just got a deed poll done in the first place and might have got it changed in time.. hindsight hey.. !

A deed poll will take you five minutes and it's free! Just do it!
    Google is your friend.
    https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-poll/make-an-adult-deed-poll

Use the section MAKE YOUR OWN DEED POLL

Unless the Uni will only accept Deed polls enrolled through the court, five minutes with a couple of friends and you're done.
