Well, only having elected MEPs on the EU commission would be a step forward. A further step forward would be for a similar setup that we have in the UK (and other European parliaments) where Private member Bills can be raised and voted on. Democracy is not served if all of the laws are created by an unelected body.

However, my solution is that we should leave the EU, which would be better for us and better for the EU. They'll then be able to make the sort of reforms that are necessary to make the Euro work (full fiscal and monetary union) without the UK acting as an Anchor. They'll be more financially secure and have an increasing GDP, which will be good for us too as we export to the EU.

This halfway in, halfway out approach is bad for everyone. It's dangerous for the EU because the Euro simply will not work correctly without closer union and it's dangerous for the UK because if the Euro fails, it will drag down the UK as well.

After listening to Remain campaigners wax lyrical about the benefits of the EU, I always ask the same question "Should the UK have full membership of the EU, including Schengen and adopting the EURO?" I've never had one of them say yes. They are voting for a status quo that puts the brake on the EU and puts all of us at risk.

One of the fairer and more reasoned explanations by an "out" voter than I've seen. Thanks.

This halfway in, halfway out position of ours is exactly why I'm a remainer. Unfettered market access without being tied in to the more tricky bits like Schengen and the EMU. Best of both worlds. :T
Don't blame me, I voted Remain.

I understand that the Government has made a small pamphlet which presumably contains unbiased material of the sort that you seek.

    very dry!

gobbledygook to allow me to post short text....
  • Ah , but another problem is that many other countries don't like much of what the EU proposes either.
However at the moment they can rely on the UK to kick up a fuss.
If we go then they will actually have to do something rather than hide behind our coat tails, publically blaming us while secretly being thankful that the Brits have taken the heat off them.

It is entirely correct that the Euro cannot work without proper fiscal union but that means both economic control from the centre and also an acceptance from say Germany that money sent to the poorer countries is not a loan but 'regional aid' and it ain't coming back.

I mean can you imagine France actually accepting for their economy to be controlled by the EU commission/ECB/Germany.

So naturally the very last thing they want is for the UK to leave, but not for the reason they will be claiming.

Just as those voting leave are voting to roll the dice on the status quo, having previously rolled a 3 or 4.

My leaflet came yesterday and went straight onto the pile of papers waiting to be put out in the recycling bin, along with some other junk mail & leaflets.

Due to the German quality of the print, the leaflet is very good at propping up my wonky table, so not a fruitless exercise in my book.

Why didn't they use a UK printer? This seems to be a bizarre oversight as not even the Government want to invest in the UK??

Yesterday I was at the supermarket and I noted that I could not find any British bananas. I will write a letter on UK made paper with a UK made pen, request that it is delivered with a UK made vehicle (containing no imported parts) direct to number 10, complaining that they have let the British banana industry languish in the doldrums for too long now.

If we do leave the EU, we need to do something to stop China and India flooding the British market with cheap, plentiful, high quality imports of traditional British staples such as curry and Chinese food.

In the interests of balance, I received the leaflet today and have to admit that leave campaigners are not exaggerating when they describe the leaflet as one-sided and as an attempt to get around spending rules. Make no mistake, my argument all the way through has been that if the Government is not neutral then it should not mess about pretending to be, nor should it be afraid to put its money where its mouth is. I'm just surprised that the Government had the guts to do it to the extent that it has, and had assumed that leave campaigners were outraged purely because it did not openly encourage people to vote leave. It does not even carry the pretence of being an impartial informational booklet - the front and back covers are very explicit that the Government is firmly in favour of remaining.
