While in the loft you should have taken note of the temperature that the loft tank stat is set to while you had the chance. Your picture is not sharp enough to be sure but it looks to me that it is set to 70 degrees if you compare your image with the manufacturers image (it can't be set to 30 degrees surely).

If the tank stat is set to 70 degrees and your boilers output flow temperature is set to 65 degrees the boiler will continually be trying to satisfy the stat temperature and will never achieve it, thus wasting your energy.

This is definitely a hot water storage tank and not a cold water tank as previously mentioned by others.
  • Hi just a little update...just had an electrician in from the council, he was here to do a safety test.................there is two tanks in loft upstairs other one was way over at the opposite side (yes I'm an idiot) he found a switch on the wall in my kitchen that had burned marks inside the switch turns out this is the immersion back up and it was constantly ON so think that this is more than likely what is causing the high usage tho ...................with this constantly on I SHOULD have had constant hot water which i didnt.....................can anyone shed any light?

Sounds like another red herring to me if you are not getting a tank full of hot water. Even if this switch was ON it may have burnt out. Simply switch off the immersion heater breaker on your main consumer unit to eliminate this from the equation and continue to read your meters regularly.

What about your programmer and the boiler coming on when at times when you don't expect it to?

Being a housewife does not prevent you understanding the basic operation of your system. You may not have the necessary tools, be able or qualified to fix any problems but you can still learn how it works. Your system is virtually identical to many gas fired systems but yours has the expensive to run by comparison electric boiler, the other components are exactly the same.

You need to learn how this simple very common S Plan CH/HW system works, which is certainly not difficult and something that you need to do. When you understand how it works you will then be able to identify any faults that may exist or occur and use it properly, rather than wasting electricity like I believe that you have been doing for far too long due to your lack of understanding.

Why do so many people think that if they set their boiler to a lower temp it will save them money, yet still get their property to the desired temp set on the room stat and heat their tank full of piping hot water?

You have stated that the Fusion boiler has usually been set to 60 degrees which is not hot enough!

If the boiler temp is set too low then the boiler will simply be working flat out for ever, trying to satisfy your hot water and central heating needs.

With the hot water storage tank stat set to 70 degrees, it will never get satisfied and will always be calling for heat from the boiler, thus more electricity used.

If the immersion was running you would have noticed it when you turned everything else off.
As some else has said your setup is not suited to E10 or E7 so change to single rate instead, tariffs are available at little more than 9p kwh and you would have that 24/7.

Another way you could save is to use the Heating less and sometimes heat a single room with a potable heater instead.
