So who the heck were the people who in your words SPOIL your meal by not having a starter- Your imaginary friends ??????? The ones you claim sit there po faced not having a starter whilst you do. Surely you didn't invent them to further your point !
Think you just got busted :rotfl::rotfl:
Do you seriously not know anyone who never has a starter ........because they had a late lunch, are dieting, don't fancy it etc. It sounds an odd dynamic to say never especially in your age group where appetites tend to shrink and health issues tend to become more common.
Some of us have good memories, even if we are in our dotage.;)
As virtually everywhere I eat has set menus - people tend to eat the starter, even if they decide to have a coffee rather than a pudding and/or cheese.
NB
Your appetite doesn't immediately start to shrink the moment you collect your SRP, neither do people simultaneously become hypochondriacs.0 -
Each person pay for their own food. That is the way to go.0

We tend to follow lent in our own ways here in our circle of friends
We aren't Catholics
The challenge is to give up something we enjoy. For one of my friends it's Facebook , for another its alcohol , for me it's chocolate.
I did offer to give up housework but apparently that wasn't an option
My late husband loved a drink and he had so few pleasures left to him that it seemed a shame for him to give it up so he switched to drinking really cheap wine for the duration.:)0 -

I agree that each person should only pay for whatever he has ordered.
As simple as that.0 -
'Champagne' is a controlled name so can only be used when it is grown in the Champagne region of France. Prosecco is the Italian equivalent and Cava the Spanish - they use the same varieties of grapes.
In my experience, you get charged for the 'champagne' name, so you normally get better quality wine if you buy prosecco or cava than if you spend the same amount of money on Champagne.
At present, I think Prosecco is getting more fashionable and well known so it isn't quite as cheap as it used to be
But I would normally expect a £10 bottle of prosecco or Cava to be bettter than a £10 bottle of champagne.
They certainly don't use the same varieties of grapes. It is the method of production that is the same, the secondary fermentation method.
Champagne, as well as being produced only in the designated region, uses three varieties of grapes and each variety will use one, two or all three. They are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Cava is produced in a designated area around Barcelona and also has three grapes permitted, Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel-lo.
They are very different wines, and usually very different prices too. I do like champagne but it is not good value most of the time. Cava is brilliant value though. I occasionally have a glass of Prosecco but don't know much about it.:dance:We're gonna be alright, dancin' on a Saturday night:dance:0 -

Food, eating and size have all become far too closely linked with morality, class and judging a person's worth. Its not really about health in any meaningful way.
TBH, I'd never heard of 'clean' eating until I read about it on this thread.
To me, 'clean' is when I've rinsed any soil from my potatoes before cooking them.
I have a healthy relationship with food.
I eat it (not to excess), enjoy it and do excercises.:rotfl:0 -
So to add another branch to this wonderful thread, if you knew that someone was paying for your meal would you have a starter expensive meal and a pudding. I ask this because some certain members of my family have done this in the past when we have said we are paying. They usually "share" a starter and have a average priced main but when we are paying (in the past) they have had a starter each, expensive main and lots of wine. I couldn't do it as I usually feel awful when someone pays anyway.
Me and my friend went out last night, I bought 2 cokes each and then we ordered our meal, I paid for the meals as a treat then she bought me a coke. I haven't had a good catchup with her for months so to me it was a good night out.
I also share food with my sons and husband (with the same fork) and we are all fine about it.0 -
It's a long time since I heard of anyone giving up anything for Lent. And this is from a (lapsed) Catholic Irish "girl" too!
I always give up alcohol and sugary sweet things for Lent. It's just a tradition and while it drives me (and everyone around me) mad, the respite on Easter Sunday can be fun!
To me it is just a discipline for a few weeks, and then back to debauchery ASAP. :rotfl::rotfl:
This reminded me that around 40 years ago I had a girlfriend who announced that she was giving up 'you-know-what' for lent. She wasn't religious but apparently giving something up was a family tradition. This was the only time I ever gave up anything for lent - I dumped her!:rotfl::dance:We're gonna be alright, dancin' on a Saturday night:dance:0
