large booking at restaurant- how to split the bill?

There are many reasons why a person might choose to only have a bowl of soup, ranging from cost, to a medical reason, or perhaps they're just not that hungry. But I utterly fail to see how they ruin the meal for you. How is the taste of your own food affected by what your dining companion has on their plate?
A number of people have said that their meal would be ruined if a fellow diner ate fewer courses than them, but nobody has explained why.
Several people have explained it but that doesn't mean that others have understood the explanation.;)0 -

Not sure why you had a name for her .... he was the one with the problem, she could just see it coming.
This is a very warped thing to jump to.0 -

And yet you still think you have the knowledge and experience to comment from a position of it?0 -

I could not care less what my dining companions have, and I'm pretty damn sure their eating habits would not spoil it for me in enjoying my food.
Not eating habits, but sitting there with a face like thunder, hungry because all they can have is a bowl of soup but they want more.
I think you're allowing the point to miss you, for obvious reasons.0 -

I have you a specific example from this thread. Don't invent reasons for your own purposes.
Nothing to do with taste, or the food, but the fact that one person is making it clear they want more, but can't have it and are sat there with a face like thunder making everyone else feel guilty. All because they refuse to accept that some experiences are not for their budget.0 -

Why does it ruin it? Are you not experienced enough in diversity to realise that people are different?
You're not paying for their dinner, why should you worry what they've got? You can moan about what they ordered if they expect you to pay for it!
I'm really happy for you, but you weren't the poster in question who does do that.
You don't even go out, so with respect, this is not for you.0 -
Oh come on! NOBODY is going to sit there with a bowl of soup, and a glass of water for the entire evening! That's pure hyperbole! If anything, people with less money would just choose cheaper options; like a pasta bake instead of a sirloin steak. And then maybe a bowl of ice cream for dessert.
If you get 'offended' at someone not spending as much as you, then that says more about you than them. What others choose to spend is NOTHING to do with you. If you started looking down your nose at me, if I chose to spend half of what you do, then that would be the last time you would have the pleasure of my company.
To suggest that people having less 'ruins' it for others, is one of the most ludicrous things I have ever heard. Are people that precious that they can't bear people spending or eating less than them. !!!!!!, when I go out for a meal with friends, I go for their company, and for a chat, not to sit there judging them for having small portions!
Good grief!!!
This is awkward for you, but that's exactly what one person said they had done because of the cost.
It's nothing to do with cost from my end, and I don't think places that people go to for the atmosphere serve pasta bake.;)
In fact, I can't recall a single restaurant I've ever been to that would serve one.0
