I think it is the single occupancy charge which I do dislike. However, without this extra charge imposed due to a cancellation, any single person could book the hotel separately from the flights for two people to avoid a single supplement and then just turn up alone. I did read a previous query on this forum from a lady who had booked a holiday with a friend with a twin bedded room. The friend became ill at the last moment and didn't go. On arrival at the hotel, the 1st lady was charged the extra supplement.

The single occupancy charge we could understand, but the room is paid for as a double room.
If some-one has already paid the full price why is there a further charge levied on the other room as well as the single occupancy?

Surely the single supplement for one person in a double room shouldn't be more than what 2 people sharing would pay.

That is what they are trying to charge

He doesnt have a break down of the individual flight and hotel prices, but at the time he booked the internet prices were about £30-40 per night per person for the hotel.
So taking the flights out of the equation (cheapy ones when he booked) That would be 3nights x£40 +£120, double this up to £240 for the double room.
So where does the £108 x 3 people= £324 excess charge come from!!?
Remember this is on top of the full amount that has already been paid.

The more we think about the more angry we get, that they even think this is acceptable.

If this had been my poor parents for example, they probably would have just gone ahead and paid it.

Really feel like this is an issue that needs to be pursued......*shouts........MARTIN!!!

I'm not sure that Leylandsunaddict does actually think that's how to do business.
I think it's just a case of pointing out that's how some companies do business.

I'm quite shocked by this revelation and think it's possibly something that should be highlighted.
I wonder if the MSE team would be interested?
I notice they've put something out about USA cancelling some ESTAs.

How do I get them interested?

At a hugely inflated price and their commission.

And when there are problems do they actually care?

A few years back I was at a career change and considered working for Trailfinders who were advertsing at the tme.

I have been to most of their destinations and under varying budgets so was well suited to advise people on destinations, how to travel, what to see etc.

Looking further into the job the main criteria was:

Ability to sell and promote Traifinders add-ons (or words to that effect).
So in effect a glorified saleperson whos interest lie in how much comission thay can make.

And I though Trailfinders were on of the better TA's:(

Working in a travel agency has always been a sales job - I don't know why anybody would ever think that their role was to be an advisor.

(I've many years' travel industry experience including teaching T&T students, virtually none of whom wanted to work in a TA, certainly after being educated on the subject.);)

They don't need to do anything !

The flights are booked - the hotel is booked.
They leave everything exactly as it is .

If on the day one person doesn't show up.....then the other three travel. By your logic if Mr No show broke down on the way to the airport or woke up too sick to travel on the day then the tour operator would be demanding more money before the other three could travel - which is of course absolute nonsense.

No doubt you'd also argue that if you buy a return flight with no intention of using the return sector you would be refused boarding too even though it's often much cheaper to buy a return than a single on some routes !

Really it's no wonder people shy away from booking packages and opt for modular travel . I worked for many years as a travel agent and it's such a shame how far the industry has fallen in recent years. Really specialist markets apart (and maybe some all inclusives) I fail to see why anyone would book a package through a travel agency if they have access to the internet themselves.

Actually (although I agree with what you're saying generally) if you buy a cheap return flight or even return ferry crossing and then don't use the second leg you may find yourself being reinvoiced for the full price single fare.

I've lost count of the number of return flights I've missed, I tend to miss one at least every couple of weeks, I'm yet to be invoiced for anything extra.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Can't say I blame them, what was once a nice job with good working conditions, great perks and reasonable pay disappeared when the multiples destroyed the industry with their greed and buying up of the competition. Who'd have thought the Internet would have wrecked their plans for market domination ? Clearly not Thomas Cook and all. Business travel followed suit when commissions eroded and the bigger companies demanded travel management as a joint venture.

Part of the reasoning behind this bizarre anomaly is the additional spend that a couple are expected to incur at a hotel in addition to the room. A single will incur (at best) only half that, often less, hence the additional charge.

I don't agree with it, more often than not I travel alone and am quite used to being treated as a second class guest ;)

With respect in the context of the holiday maker that's utter rubbish. The frequent business traveller doing it on a very regular basis and easily tracked through a FF programme it's a possibility but even then the risk is very, very small so please stop scaremongering or post a link to where this actually happened to a holidaymaker.
