It isn't 2 hours though, it's an hour or less. There's no reason why she couldn't have popped to the loo between lessons 3 and 4.

Except in schools where the teachers stand in front of the toilet doors and don't let you enter between lessons.

When I was at school that would have made you late for lesson four and more of a telling off than asking to go during a lesson.

Each year had different toilets spread across the site, so it would be rare for you to be going past yours in between lessons, apart from (I think) year 9 when they were the ones in the main corridor. Year 8 was upstairs in the maths block so for all other lessons would have been a detour.

If someone was allowed out during a lesson they were told to go to the nearest one.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Why on earth do they do that?

When I was at secondary school, we had to go in school break time (all girls school). My two DD's secondary school have the same rules. In my case I had kidney health issues all through secondary school and had a note from Matron that I could use to leave the room to go to the toilet, but never had to use it. My cousin has IBS and had a note in case, but never had to use it during lessons (different school with same rules).

DD's secondary school has the same rules about only going to the toilet in break times or in between classroom changes and I have never heard them or their friends complaining about this. My understanding is that when DD worked in her Saturday job there was also an expectation that till staff would use their breaks to go to the toilet, so the school practice stood her in good sted.

As a teacher, I am expected to pee at break.

I know which kids have special toilet needs, and whom i will let go pee in lessons. The rest should be able to manage 2 hours without peeing, just like I have to.

I have had SO many kids tell me that they will wee their pants if I don't let them go. So far no one has.

The toilets near my classroom are really nice, so lots of kids ask to go!

They have a 20 minute break, so plenty of time to pee!

I have got up with a stomach upset today. If someone had told me I had to wait 50 minutes there would have been a worse problem than wee in my pants.

I can see both sides, I volunteer at a local primary and am amazed at the constant stream of kids going to the loo. On the other hand I remember being on a bus stuck in traffic. I was desperate to get off, early stages of pregnancy and horrible morning sickness. I asked the driver to let me off and he refused, I said fine but I am going to be sick and he then looked at me and realised I was serious and opened the doors and watched as I made a hell of a mess in the gutter. Disgusting I know but what else could I do? After that I took a carrier bag with me for emergencies.

I walked out of class to use the toilet a few times. The teacher said no so I went anyway.. I'd asked politely and discretely (worded 'may I be excused to use the toilet') and I was not going to explain to a group of 40+ mixed sex students I had a menstrual tsunami going on and I was going regardless.

We werent allowed to go between lessons and even now I need to change every 30-45 minutes.. yes it is a pita!

I got an ear chewing when I got back but explained why I had no choice and if they could find an alternative I was more than happy to try it!

My 13 y/o has a 'pee pass' as does my 15 y/o for different reasons, she had letters from clinics saying she had to be allowed to go.. my 21 y/o had one too (Mrs Slackbladder even now!) She sits by the doors in uni lectures so she can slink off to loo without too much disturbance. My 5 y/o has recurrent UTI's so she goes when she needs to too.. I cant imagine any of them messing about or abusing this allowance. My 17 y/o son had surgery and it damaged the nerves to his bladder so he physically could not hold it and he was complained at by staff a few times until I got medical letters etc.

All it achieves is children not drinking the 6-7 hours they are at school which is very very bad for the kidneys and also makes the problem worse because the bladder doesnt stretch and wont hold as much as it should.

If you had a stomach bug you shouldnt be at school for 48 hours though regardless of whether the clearance went up or down!

So what if you take a sudden tummy upset or need to be sick? Would you just do it in the classroom?

This happened to me once. I asked the teacher if I could go to the toilet because I felt sick. She told me to sit down and relax and I'd be fine. 5 mins later I vomited all over her desk. To be fair she looked mega guilty and I got to go home.

Thing is I wasn't the sort of pupil who regularly asked to go otherwise I would have understood.

Because you're not meant to go between lessons. It delays the lesson from starting. That's how it was at my school. In between lessons, teachers stood at all exits and toilets.

I remember those horrid days of all day "morning" sickness, I had to use the underground and had a double carrier bag to throw up into. I had a bucket by my desk, when teaching to throw up into as the least thing could set me off. The staff room was a no go for ages as the smell of tea and coffee would set me off.
