You would still be British in an idependent Scotland, Britain or should we really say Great Britain is a geographical construct, ie the British Isles.... it's the United Kingdom which will change when indy comes

I would've thought this was easy to understand
Same here. Great Britain is the short form of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

    Thanks Enterprise 1701C

Think it's someone else who consistently struggles to find stuff "easy to understand" :rotfl:

Ok. Remain a UK citizen then.

If yourself or zagubov, both who are here arguing for an Independent Scotland (but neither of you will choose to stay in an iScotland), can retain UK citizenship, then I can too ;) right?

Is it not British citizenship though ? Do we have united Kingdom citizenship ?

Now this one I'm not entirely sure of .. I cant think of an example of people claiming united Kingdom. Citizenship only British ( although it should be Great British) ... that's not to say it doesn't exist, just I can't think k of anyone that has claimed it or states it

The way I see it united Kingdom is a political construct, can people lay claim to belonging to a political costructure ? And in my opinion who I earth would want to ?

No Great Britain is a geographical construct the United Kingdom is a political construct ... do keep up

The two are often intertwined and confused ... but it's good practice to keep them separate ... even if the government can't

    http://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofBritain/The-UK-Great-Britain-Whats-the-Difference/

So as you can see the United Kingdom of great Britain and Northern Ireland is the geographical construct of what is a political union, great Britain is a geographical construct so you will always be British

The British Isles are a geographical construct of all the land mass within a certain area ( this includes Southern Ireland)

Very easy to get your head around really

You sound like Wolfie Smith from the 80's classic "Citizen Smith"....except he had slightly more realistic political aims than you do :)

If you stop being British then you'll stop being British surely?

I realise it maintains the 'don't scare the horses' narrative but if Scotland leaves the UK then the Scots will not be British any more.

Some may have the right to dual nationality due to being born in what remains of the UK or have a residency qualification but I'd fully expect Scots born and living in Scotland to become Scottish not British on Scexit.

That seems right. Why would someone expect to retain citizenship of a country which you voted to be independent of and conversely why would I as a citizen of the UK expect to be a citizen of another independent country?

But independence will not stop people living in Scotland from being British ... even though some hope it will ... I see a lot of indy people say Scottish not British ... like some people here they don't seem to understand that Scotland is part of Great Britain ... even after indy ... it's weird

And you sound like some that hasn't got a clue about basic things . . But I won't hold it against you ;)

Says the most consistently clueless poster on the entire thread! :D
  • So all the different countries that define themselves as Spanish, German, French etc should define themselves by the island they live on? I don't know many of my French or German friends that define themselves as European before French or German.

Still, if the eu still exists in a few years time and allows Scotland to join it will be a moot point anyway. Their quest for "ever closer union" means that Scotland would exist in name only, all control would be handed to the eu, and that means all.

Of course, should the eu crash and burn, which I suspect it will within a few years, then Scotland would be a very small fish in a very large sea.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare
