I think it was Michael Portillo who suggested that for a newly independent Scotland to succeed and compete with the rUK it will have to be an Irish celtic-tiger type economy. Which considering the SNP have dined out on its supposed core socialist/progressive principles it would involve a major about-face. I'm not sure the thousands of new ex-Labour SNP voters would be happy with that. Its easy to be progressive with other peoples money!
'Progressive' policy is the plaything of arrogant vain-glorious types that are desperate to add to their compassion status no matter the cost to Scotland's prosperity.
People such as the dreadfully obsequious Angus Robertson or the earnest, permanently affronted Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh constantly raising eyebrows at anyone deviating from the righteous and true path.
They endlessly seek to add to their status by aligning themselves with all things 'worthy', from over-zealous employee centric regulations to diversity quotas and obsessing about glass ceilings and 'what I should tell my Daughers about Donald Trump' (tell 'em they aren't entitled to a cotton wool world, might be a good start').
All of this has the net result of sucking the life force out of a culture.
Who needs to strive when you can just play the victim and get State hand-outs?
Why would kids go the extra mile when their teachers have always promised them everyone is a little shining star, and deserves a prize for coming non-first'?
Who needs to worry about delivering company targets when they know they can rely on asymmetric employee law to side with them and gift them compensation lump sums?
Socialists ruin nations and I'm afraid Scotland has a particular penchant for the most self-seeking self-aggrandised brand of them. Shallow virtue signalling and emotional sign-posting seem to be key currencies there.
England has its fair share, but the proportion in Scotland seems out of the ordinary.0 -
England has its fair share, but the proportion in Scotland seems out of the ordinary.
Its a vital part of the Nationalist narrative in Scotland to over-exaggerate the myth that the Scots and Scotland are somehow way more 'progressive' than the English, no doubt to try and persuade more Scots that the only answer to the politcal chasm between the two nations is to vote to split.
The fatal flaw in the plan is that the Socialist paradise the SNP have built in Scotland is being built with other peoples money and that money disappears the instant Scotland goes it alone.“Britain- A friend to all, beholden to none”. 🇬🇧0 -
Buckle up people it's gonna be a bumpy ride0

Dumfries and Galloway have made their position clear too.
Unless they have figured out a way to float free down south they will geographically belong to Scotland ... and if they do manage to float free they won't be able to take their oil fields with them0 -

The SNP have opened up pandora's box. You can't close it now.
Many will support Dumfries and Galloway, the Shetland and Orkney isles in their bid to escape the mess Yes voters and the SNP are trying to create. I welcome them with open arms, if they don't want to remain in the UK but separate from Scotland, oh well... what's good for the goose is good for the gander right? Especially since the isles used to belong to Norway in the 1400's, so really they're separate from Scotland, colonies of Scotland. I see no reason why they couldn't use the same arguments you use to leave Scotland as it is now.
Of course they will take their oil with them, it will be part of their territorial waters. So English waters contain most of the natural gas, the isles will have access to the majority of the oil, happy days.
Edit: Sorry have to laugh again at the "geography" argument. Both island groups were absorbed into the Kingdom of Scotland in the 15th century and remained part of the country following the formation of the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707, and later the United Kingdom after 1801.

Evil Scotland, evil! Stealing peoples land and calling it your own. How do you look yourselves in the mirror?
Should Scotland separate from the UK I fully support the Northern Isles in their attempts to separate from Scotland. I'm sure the UK government would welcome them back into the union.0 -

Alaska isn't physically attached to the rest of the USA.
It didn't stop them buying it off Canada.
It's not really a hindrance.0 -

Maybe at a later date the people of Ruk may wish to purchase Shetland etc ... and maybe Shetland will agree to the sale ... and maybe even Scotland will agree to the sale
I don't imagine it being Alaska style cheap though
Like everything else just now though we will just need to wait and see ... let's not talk about selling land at this stage independence before that surely ?0 -

Only kabayiri mentioned purchase.
I'd welcome them seceding from Scotland and rejoining the UK or even going it alone, they would certainly be flush with all of that natural resource. We haven't even mentioned the fishing waters they'll have. Basically lopping off the top of Scotland as it is now, leaving it as a rump with a bit of water at the top and some to the sides with some hills.
Oh and Dumfries and Galloway seceding from Scotland to remain in the UK too. I'd welcome them also. They may not have anything to give like the Northern Isles, but they're good Great British people.0 -

Not to mention the isolation that would leave both Ireland & Scotland in - and Northern Ireland if they choose independence.
Where else could you cross by ferry with your car if not at Cairnryan/Stranraer?
Liverpool?
Fishguard?
Both also in rUK.
Ah well, I'm sure the Irish could expand the Cherbourg and Roscoff route to avoid these pesky UK Customs and stay within the Eurozone eh?0
