Bizarre isn't it, on the one hand hate being told what to do by far away Westminster, but over the moon to be bossed about by Brussels.
I'm not one to poo-poo Scotland wanting to become an independent nation, after all it's the very thing I argue for regards Brexit, but for goodness sake just go independent, don't shackle yersells to Brussels
Double yawn.

As a region of the UK the Scots have zero control over their immigration policy, zero control over their border policy, zero control over their trade policy, zero control over their VAT and Corporate tax policy, and next to zero control over National Insurance and the vast majority of income taxation.
Even as a fully signed up member of the EU they'd have infinitely more control and sovereignty over their own affairs than they do today as a region of the UK.
For that matter - most US states within a large 'Federal' nation have more control over their own affairs than Scotland does at the moment - so even with the possibility of a European 'Federal Superstate' at some point in the future it would still result in more national level control and vastly more 'sovereignty' for Scotland than it has today.Don't blame me, I voted Remain.0 -

Is it...?
Hamish mentions lack of control over VAT and Coporation tax as being issues under Westminster. They're going to become issues under Brussels shortly according to EU bigwig plans.0 -
I look forward to Scotland taking full control of its large budget deficit and becoming a stand alone net contributor to the European Union while at the same time leaving behind its current status as a net beneficiary of the UK Union.
As a resident close to the South of England coastline I would welcome the reinstatement of Portsmouth as the shipbuilding dockyard for the Royal Navy and the relocation of the RN`s submarine fleet to the Westcountry also.

Oh, I remember him.
Wasn't he the same McTavish who 2 years ago argued against Scottish Independence, claiming it would be economic suicide?If I don't reply to your post,
you're probably on my ignore list.0 -
How do you think the other countries in the queue will react to an iScotland jumping the queue?
Shouldn't the EU be even handed in it's treatment of new membership requests?
Put it this way. If Le Penn won and decided to take France out of the EU, do you think they should have priority in negotiations over UK?
There is no 'queue'. Turkey first applied in 1987, countries don't queue up behind Turkey. Pre-accession does not take the same time for each individual country, as it depends on how much of the country's laws and infrastructure has to be amended to fit the accession criteria.- political criteria: stability of institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for and protection of minorities;
- economic criteria: a functioning market economy and the capacity to cope with competition and market forces;
- administrative and institutional capacity to effectively implement the acquis* and ability to take on the obligations of membership.

I thought most people in this thread were all for people taking back control
Between the SNP and the Greens they have a majority in the Scottish Parliament to support the holding of a referendum at present, so I'm not sure I see the issue in all honesty.
If I was Scottish I think I would probably still vote to remain in the UK (although the case is a bit different now compared to in the last referendum), but I don't see any real reason to for the rest of the UK to block a vote that the SNP and Greens seem to have a democratic mandate to call for.
If the Scottish people think there shouldn't be a vote at all then they will no doubt vote it down and punish the SNP for calling for a referendum at the next election, that's how democracy works.0 -

As another indication of how many Scots do not even want another indyref see this parliamentary petition:
https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/180642
I have said before that I am actually pro-independence.
NOT with the farcical SNP however.
And certainly not until someone can provide a reasonably complete, sustainable budget and plan for independence.
Which so far us Scots have never had - certainly not from the SNP.0 -

I wish they would close down that petition website.
50K clickers indicates nothing at all Jock.
Neither did the 3 million plus who clicked the 'we want another EU referendum' petition a while ago.Don't blame me, I voted Remain.0 -
It should be Stay or Leave, but if you do Stay commit to it. If you do Leave commit to it.
That's no good. What's the next referendum going to be about then?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
