Sturgeon is playing her last card because it's the only one left. What she has overlooked is that English sentiment has moved since the last independence referendum, and no one now cares very much whether Scotland stays in the Union or not.
So if that's how they want it the Scots are perfectly entitled to spend the next two years wasting time in pointless, devisive and damaging electioneering, when they could be lead by a responsible and less blinkered government that was actually going to address the faults in the lagging Scottish economy.
Scottish business could be spending the time usefully cooperating with government-led economic growth and preparing for the undoubted challenges of Brexit. But if the country isn't interested in that and prefers the exitement of continuous electioneering, then good luck to them.
No one else in the UK now cares very much. Nor it seems does the EU, after the dead silence Sturgeon's last tour of European countries produced. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
This smacks of the last throw of the dice for Sturgeon, she clearly has backed herself into a corner where the Nationalist Beast must be fed with the prospect of another indyref. I feel for Scots Unionists as they now face another protracted period of localised divisive politics. Whatever happens, this will not end well for Scotland.“Britain- A friend to all, beholden to none”. 🇬🇧0

I think we do care in the rest of the UK about extracting the best possible deal for the 90%, should Scotland choose independence.
There are a few things we need from an iScotland, but there is a heck of a lot that iScotland would need.
We could provide central banking services; access to customs and security systems; the whole gamut; ALL at a handsome profit. It would still be cheaper for iScotland than setting up their own.0 -
Going from a certain win with only 28% wanting indy to panicked vow and 45% wanting indy would indicate maybe they messed up a bit
There should be no vow now. It clearly didn't offer much last time.
It should be Stay or Leave, but if you do Stay commit to it. If you do Leave commit to it.0 -
A lot in Scotland don't give a s**t about Brexit as we were totally ignored pre and post the vote, which is another good reason for this vote to go ahead.
If you think Westminster is ignoring you, wait until you're an independent member of the EU.
When important decisions need to be made by Brussels, can you see EU leaders flying to Edinburgh and asking Nicola what she'd like to happen? If I don't reply to your post,
you're probably on my ignore list.0 -

And yet more expensive than remaining in the union. If they were to vote for independence they would then be competitors of ours in the world rather than partners. In terms of obtaining trade and business the gloves would be off.0 -

Yes, they would be competitors, and equally their gloves would be off.
I think it's only fair that the Scottish voters know this. They may decide it's worth the risk.
I'm only interested in extracting the best deal for those of us outside Scotland.0 -
Surely all it would take is for the UK and EU representatives to stand at the same platform and say that they have discussed the Scottish proposed solution and all concluded that it is totally unworkable (which anyone with an IQ over 3 already knows of course).
Wouldn't that kind of blow the SNPs 'May isn't willing to compromise' argument straight out the water?0 -
Indy's will make the case British financial services companies would move to Scotland to access the EU. A fair argument.
However, this will be countered with British reducing corporation tax, perhaps a sweetheart tax deal for financial services alone which the socialist Scottish state wont be able to countenance.
Furthermore new MIFID2 and BASAL4 rules due in 2018 make the EU still less tolerable for FS companies.0 -

Bizarre isn't it, on the one hand hate being told what to do by far away Westminster, but over the moon to be bossed about by Brussels.
I'm not one to poo-poo Scotland wanting to become an independent nation, after all it's the very thing I argue for regards Brexit, but for goodness sake just go independent, don't shackle yersells to Brussels0
