No, it's more a modern pub restaurant. One person in charge of the kitty ( he's the biggest ) keeps ordering food and drinks that the others really don't like at all, and keeps money back from from the kitty to spend on things like service charges, tips, attractive waitresses and side orders like Trident ice cream. Also has run up a huge tab (again, he's in charge of the kitty).

With money in the kitty running low. He then starts a massive argument with the landlord and decides he and the other three of his pals are leaving immediately. He feels a carry out in the house and some pot noodles will be ok for now because they'll soon find somewhere else to go that serves 5* gourmet meals and drinks for the same price. He doesn't know where, but is sure it's out there somewhere.

Two of the others don't want to go. They like it there, it's a nice pub.. sure it has flaws with occasional slow service and the odd fight. But they like the community feel and most of the other 27 regulars in there, even if the landlord is a bit crabby at times. Plus they're a bit annoyed at getting pushed around and told what to eat, drink and do all the time 'like it or lump it' style.

    * I feel I could get a publishing deal out of this. ;)
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?
  • That is a fantastic analogy Shakey, and very accurate :D

Can't wait for the sensible ones to grab the purse from the ones that are ordering the wrong things :D

like the pals in a pub analogy. Continuing it, we've just seen someone entering the pub we've been using for years, spit twice on the floor, complain about not getting a freebie, and leave.

    Slightly different analogy......

It's a great pub, (let's call it the UK Arms).

Frequented by all and sundry, diversity knows no bounds; black white, asian, male, female; gender respectfull; seats at the bar given up for the less able etc, etc.

Of course, not everyone in the pub are friends; there are people who speak and those who don't.....unwholesome individuals aren't barred from the pub; but to call people whose views you find disgusting "pals" or "friends", would just be plain ridiculous. :)

It's not perfect, but no one who goes there can think of one single pub they'd rather drink in; it has the best facilities, location and never really has any out and out "barneys".

Landlord has had a little bit of bother with the Brewery and quite soon the pub isn't going to be tied to Brussels Ales no more and will become a Free House. Some of the punters are a bit bothered by this; they had enjoyed the taste of Old Paris Hen and Brussels Light, (although by and large these beers can cost a bit more), but others were glad about this; they had thought the brewery would be going out of buisiness soon anyway. Of course despite one's taste in ale the pub customers agreed on one thing, there are far more important things to worry about, and they resolved to make the pub even better than it had been before.

Now it had to be said, a lot of people in the pub did not like the Landlord, (although the majority did). Most of the people who didn't like the landlord were philosophical about it though and didn't let such a minor inconvenience offend them; basically they held no grudge.

"You know what the pub games like", they would say, "we'll probably have a different landlord in a few years anyway, they always change landlords round here".

It became known that a few people were thinking of drinking in a different pub due to the landlord and brewery issue; how the sensible people laughed!! :)

A bigger problem than both the landlird and the brewery surfaced however. :(:(

A group of loudmouths who had always enjoyed the facilities started saying it was a rubbish pub. They said they could run a better pub with a different landlord. They told lies about the UK Arms and then amazed everyone with fantastic tales about their pub which was to be called The Sturgeon and Flannel.

"It will have 100 different types of beer on draught, caviar pies, dancing girls and a zebra shaped pool table; and best of all; all this will be free!!

People in the UK Arms were annoyed, and rightly so. The Landlord for some time had been giving these loudmouths special treatment....discounts off their pints of Tartan Special, a 35ml measure of Bells where the respectful customers made do with 25ml, and of course free use of the snug bar every Tuesday, where they indulged in private, (but not very important) debate and "decision making".

Worse was to come. "How will you pay to set up, staff and manage this wonderful tavern", asked the stoic landlord?

"Why you and all your customers will", answered the unsavoury leader of the loudmouths, "why on earth would we take any responsibility, fiscal or otherwise with this project?".

To cut a long story a bit shorter the pub regulars agreed to have a one off, binding vote about which pub was best; the established, successful UK Arms, or the mythical Sturgeon and Flannel.

    The rest is history. :)

Looks like it's gonna be a hard Brexit ... so indy ref 2 is inevitable

Now to decide when the best time for one will be

Interestingly yesterday I spoke to a lifelong independence campaigner who has stated she would consider voting No next time. So there is a lot of work to do for the next indy ref

Elantan, I categorically assure you Scottish people will not vote to leave it's biggest trading partner.

Can you imagine a massive EU crash, Scotland would find itself in a very precarious position compared to remaining in the good old UK which would defend Scotland to the last.

Can you not see that we will not experience any loss of trade with the EU (EU wont ever chose to self harm its trade) but will be doing more globally, does this not stir your juices?

I don't believe people when they say they are 'lifelong' independence campaigners. But say they'd vote No next time. It doesn't make any sense. Especially at the present time where most lifelong independence supporters main stance for their entire voting lifetime..was getting Scotland away from possible right wing Tory governments, and an increasingly right wing leaning Labour party under Blair etc.

They either want Scottish independence or they don't. And if they don't want it now, then they probably never really have. The EU is a secondary issue among others. The Brexit vote has only highlighted the gulf now between Scottish and rUK voters in very stark terms.
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.

    Nope.

    "Vote with independence in mind!"

The SNP are manipulative and deceitful.

And anyway, there's a lot of focus shifting from the EU to EEA/EFTA and following whatever the rUK does regarding a customs union or not to ensure UK trade continues as is. This 'trade/border' mantra needs to die a very quick and horrible death in the lead up to the next indy ref. <--- I agree with elantan, one is just about unavoidable now. Sturgeon has nothing to lose, Scotland is out of the Single Market by doing nothing anyway. She might as well go for it and see what happens.

Can I be very frank and upfront with you ? I imagine they're loooong past, if ever, caring about what voters in the rUK like you think about them. You're simply not a factor.
