Yes, many parts of the U.K. are stunning. I'm probably biased but Scotland's hills, mountains & lochs are hard to beat for sheer breathtaking beauty. City life isn't for me, I need greenery not greyness :-)

come south : beautiful scenery and the weather is good enough to actually see it most of the time.
I know you would miss the whining and handout culture but I'm sure you could adapt to more fulfilling life.

I almost credited you with writing a pleasant post.

    Alas it wasn't to be...

I wonder how the people of Portsmouth view this latest SNP driven manifestation of the Scottish grievance culture. No wonder the people of Scotland are now viewed with such derision in the rUK with the SNP setting the narrative.

I'm sure the people of Portsmouth would feel exactly the same if their jobs & contracts which were promised to them were under threat so soon after.

It's easy & lazy just to disregard as SNP grieviance.

    Think about it.

    Scottish elections.

    Turnout 55%.

SNP 46.5% of the vote and failed to win a majority so far!!!

Looks like the cracks are beginning to show in the SNP... Well down on some of the polls and expectations, failed to take the expected seats from the Lib Dems, lost seats to the Tories, and might even have failed to win a majority...

The second big story is a resurgent Tory party taking second place from Labour, winning 4 more constituency seats than it did last time - including taking seats held previously by the SNP, increasing it's vote share by 11% (!!!!!), doubling it's total seats, and becoming the official opposition in Scotland. :)

    Interesting times old chap.

I was reading a piece earlier that claimed that if you look at the British Social Attitudes Survey Scots pretty much fall into line with the rest of the UK with their views, that the idea that they are particularly left wing is a myth. This wasn't it but it's all I can find:

    http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/scotland-blog/2015/mar/26/three-things-the-latest-british-social-attitudes-survey-tells-us-about-scotland

I do find it interesting looking at how people actually think as revealed in polls versus how the bien pensant think people think. Real people are much more anti-welfare and pro-nationalisation than is generally believed for example.

Sky News election analyst Michael Thrasher said the party's resurgence was down to anti-SNP tactical voting by supporters of the Union.

"In Edinburgh Central voters swung behind the Tories, in Edinburgh Western went to the Lib Dems and in Edinburgh Southern they swung to Labour - it's clear evidence of tactical voting," he said.

"There is a clear indication that in some parts of Scotland, particularly in the east, voters may be rallying around the Conservative theme of defending the Union.

"So in a sense the Tories may be leading the fightback of the people that voted No in the Scottish referendum and getting them to swing behind one party rather than several parties."

    The fightback begins....

Seems the Scots don't want to pay more tax (or something obviously labelled as tax).

That's self interest behaviour, just like down 'ere.

That's a bit of a problem if you needed to raise additional funds once independent. The alternative is shrinking the state, but that isn't really a SNP preference either is it?

    Which leaves growing the economy...

    Well it's official.

    SNP lost their majority.

    Conservatives the party of opposition.

Any chance of a second indyref now off the table for this parliament.

A good day for Scotland. :)

The acolytes immersed in social media are going to be scratching their heads. A careful assessment of internet arguments won, tweets retweeted and Facebook likes predicted far grander things.

Ruth Davidson has never won an election in her political life. She survives via media, a fun personality, trying to ignore as much as possible that she's part of the Conservative party and photo op's riding tanks and buffalo. Good luck with that.
