A premise based on over $100 a barrel I believe. :rotfl:“Britain- A friend to all, beholden to none”. 🇬🇧0 -

Absolutely. Scotland needs Brent Crude to be well north of $100 a barrel to make up for the loss of the current subsidy of GBP 8 billion or so. Total UK oil and gas revenue is currently only about GBP 1.25 billion.

Even if a hypothetically independent Scotland was to get 90% of that total it would be well down on the deal, and its government would be obliged to impose Greek levels of austerity as it struggled to reduce its fiscal deficit.
Of course, I am very much in favour of Scottish independence, as I'd much rather the UK spent that GBP 8 billion or so on something useful like the NHS, or funding a free Costa espresso for every citizen on the last Friday of every month, rather than subsidising a bunch of weirdos who are sufficiently misinformed to regard a haggis as food and the bagpipes as a musical instrument.:)
In the event of Scottish independence, the UK might well be obliged to impose heavy import tariffs on scotch and whatever else to fund the building of a hard border to control the flood of refugees coming south.
But it's entirely up to the Scottish electorate whether it wants to pay the price of independence. People do sometimes make emotional rather than rational choices.0 -
If the UK was failing, its Treasury wouldn't be bunging you chaps circa £10bn every year to cover your public spending. With England the only constituent nation of the UK in fiscal surplus, sometimes I think it would be nice to see how the Celtic nations would fare without the English cash cow.
Unfortunately the cow has just decided to declare itself independent of the pasture in which it has grown fat. To go and stand independently on a cold stoney mountain with no grass. Therefore I think the Scots can conclude that the milk is running out.0 -

Fear not British Celts, thanks to Joel Barnett the milk never runs out. Just keep on voting for grievance peddling petty Nationalists and the scared witless British establishment will keep the cash flowing.“Britain- A friend to all, beholden to none”. 🇬🇧0 -

In this day and age they could have accurate figures but choose not to - pretty convenient.baldly going on...0 -
saw the interview with the big yin, I stopped being a fan of his a long time ago ( long before indy ref 1) and still ain't a fan, it was however interesting to hear his changed views on the subject of independence, even though he doesn't have a vote in the next indy ref and we certainly shouldn't bank on anything he has to say, the interview was fascinating in how it was almost a subject he was desperate to talk about, I'm hearing lots of reports that many in Scotland have now changed their mind and would vote for independence.. I spose we will find out next indy ref if that's true or not0

So in Scotland a minority of the population voting for the SNP in a General Election equates to a vote for independence. you couldn't make it up. Politicians are shallow people these days. Undermines Nicola's authority somewhat.0 -
what on earth does an interview with the big yin on tv have to do with voting SNP ?0

I would be amazed if the last few years of English politics has done anything other than create a large push for independence. The SNP don't even need to promote it as far as I can see, every time Boris Johnson says or does anything that's all the reason Scots would need to vote Yes right there.
Unfortunately I live in an English county where they think Bozo is just peachy...0
