  • Devolution and Home rule for Scotland being dismantled

    Well here's hoping!

I watched PMQ today, as I often do, and saw Blackford's theatrics.

The whole thing was clearly pre-planned. Blackford got what he asked for, a vote for a debate on his current pet whinge, which the Speaker in effect offered after PMQ. But being clearly after a reason for a mass SNP walkout, and Plan A (outright denial of any vote at all) having failed he went to Plan B and by his disrespectful behaviour Blackford gave the Speaker no choice but to send him to the naugty step, followed obedient by his gaggle of MPs.
Asking for the debate was obviously pre-planned. But they couldn't have known that Bercow wouldn't follow the rulebook and then expel Blackford from the chamber. Unless you actually think Bercow was in on it too ? No point in a debate after PMQ's. The chamber would be empty and in any case, the debate that really mattered was the night before. The media tried to bury it, unsuccessfully.
The SNP use the lie of Westminster disrespect for Scotland to sow anti UK sentiment but the truth of it is that while there is disrespect it is not for the Scots, it is for the SNP. Every time they open their mouth it is about their hobby-horse and nout else. They are simply not worth listening to. As far as looking after Scotland's interests in the here and now, they are completely ineffective. An MP is meant to represent his constituents, not just his own hangups.
Am afraid when you say the SNP aren't worth listening to, you're tarring those who vote for them as not worth listening to.
As for the power-grab claim, I'd like to see it debated, but I simply don't believe that the SNP really want that; as usual they like their fairy tales to go undebated. Until or if it happens however, I'm not going to waste time reading or listening to spitefull SNP bile.
The power grab claim we were debating even here two years ago string. Sewell/Legislative consent etc ? It was always heading to this showdown between the two parliaments. Devolution is over as of that 15 min joke of a non-debate last night. Momentum is back with the SNP, new members are signing up in droves, anger, frustration with the Tories and this whole Brexit farce palpable. Labour appear to have completely given up on Scotland ( abstained ). This is only heading one way and it's back to the ballot box and very soon too. The fuse has been lit and there's no going back.
. Anyone who believes that, after seven years, normal devolutionary service will resume needs to think again.

The UK Government will clearly not allow the Scottish Parliament to reverse any or all of the changes made in the “transition period”, since these are deemed crucial for the functioning of the new, post-Brexit UK internal market. They are for keeps. Moreover, the precedent will be established that Westminster can now over-ride any and all of Scotland’s devolved responsibilities whenever it considers it necessary – which is pretty much all the time. Home rule is over.

It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?
  • Well here's hoping!
I forgot to add that in ending Home Rule trying to push to far - making for a straight choice between independence and a Tory Brexit.. Sturgeon will be laughing her socks off.

Same old tape running in a loop. Self generated stunt and the spin flows. All becoming too predictable. For a campaign it lacks any real imagination or creativity. Meanwhile the Scottish economy remains stuck in the mud.

But that must be Westminster's fault. The Scottish government couldn’t possibly bear any responsibility for that.

  • Oooh things definitely moving fast if old school die hard Labour and unionist types like the previous Daily Record editor are changing their minds.
The former newspaper editor who masterminded a promise of extra powers for Holyrood in the days before the independence referendum has said Scotland should quit the UK. Murray Foote, who stood down as editor of the Daily Record in March, orchestrated The Vow..

"I cannot tolerate a Tory government prepared to treat devolution with the blatant contempt displayed in Tuesdays cynical one-man debate on the EU Withdrawal Bill. It was a democratic abomination.

I have reconciled that independence would herald good and bad. I trust in us to solve the problems that will come our way. If so many other countries can, it is inconceivable that Scotland can't. The Yes-Yes campaign which brought our parliament back from the dead 20 years ago asked Scotland to take a leap of faith and to trust in ourselves. When we are next asked the independence question, I'll strap on my work boots and take that leap. "

Messing with devolution and that joke of a 'debate' the other night a step too far for a lot of folks. The Tories are pushing things too far. Welcome Murray, takes b***s to publicly change your mind like this and admit you were wrong. He won't be the last, am hoping Kezia Dugdale is next. :)

Well this is all getting very exciting for the next referendum that will be coming in, oh around... 2060, and which will be No. Again.
