It will be interesting how many of Macron's minions do - as many have never been elected before let alone held a government position. They may be stars.

Macron didn't seem to be winning universal appeal either. Turnout is very low. People don't even seem to be bothering to vote. A political system that's worse than the UK's.

Scot Gov Climb down on Named Persons
The Scottish Government has finally brought forward new legislation after its Named Person proposals were declared unlawful by the UK Supreme Court almost a year ago.

NO2NP spokesman Simon Calvert said: “The new proposals confirm one of the most remarkable, ignominious and expensive U-turns in the history of the Scottish Government and a huge victory for mums, dads and children across the country and the 35,000-plus NO2NP supporters.

“They have now been forced to accept that their original draconian Big Brother proposals were an utter shambles from the start, representing an interference in family life and a fundamental breach of European human rights laws on privacy and information sharing.

“In effect they say the duty of a Named Person will be to consider whether sharing information is likely to promote, support or safeguard the wellbeing of the child or young person. They must also then consider whether sharing that information would be compatible with data protection law, human rights law and the law of confidentiality."

A financial memorandum published alongside the new Bill suggests that the cost of retraining teachers and NHS staff will top £1m – and that is probably on the optimistic side.

In addition, crucially, the policy memorandum makes clear that the advice etc offered by a Named Person is voluntary.

Received this from NO2NP today via email.

This is fantastic news for all parents in Scotland.

It's gone very quiet here of late.

I want to know if I was wrong or right about my predictions from the horses mouth!

I recall SNP to lose approx. 20 seats and for indy to be soundly rejected by the Scottish electorate.

After being told I was consistently wrong, that I don't know about Scottish politics or matter because I'm not Scottish. I would love to see one of you admit I was right about it all. To see that the veil has been lifted for you and that not only do Scots not want independence but that independence perhaps isn't the answer to all questions! Perhaps to see them even question the party without fear of the commisars.

I see that Shakey has not visited since the day of the GE (well, but chastened I hope) so much of the provocation has gone.

No doubt we will all reassemble when the need arises. :)

I saw the exit poll on Twitter, thought '!!!!!! ?..Ouch', considered whether to watch the coverage, decided against and put the Wedding Singer on instead.. then went to bed and got up early the next morning to commence our hols. Glad I was away to be honest.

Thoughts. A painful night for the SNP ( and for me ) somewhat balanced with the Tories not getting a majority and all the major panics going on now. The SNP would be well advised to lie low for a while at let this Brexit and Tory s***show unfold for a while more. This is what we've all been waiting for to see finally start moving and the consequences of.

Davidson following a brief frenzy calling for a soft Brexit and reiterating to May exactly what the SNP has been saying for the last year about staying in the Single Market.. has disappeared off the scene as per when the going gets tough. Dugdale is calling for another GE 'to get the Tories out'. Stop me if you've heard this one before ? :rotfl:

UK Tories are now far too scared now to do anything resulting in another GE and will do anything they can to stop one. Labour are riding high.. however, some folks are only now waking up to the fact that Corbyn and McDonnell are advocating as hard a Brexit as May is. Both parties are going to go to war over it within their own respective party. The EU are bored, want it all over with and to move on asap.

The Scottish Parliament still has it's referendum/section 30 vote already in hand. 56/35/6 MP's.. no difference. May ( or whoever leading the Tories ) or Corbyn, should he win another election or become PM via the SNP putting him there... trying to take Scotland out of the Single Market, and bearing in mind all of Hammond and Carney's warnings today of disaster for the UK... will result in the same outcome. A vote in Scotland at the end of the negotiation process. The GE changed nothing in Holyrood, and any vote will be Holyrood's call.
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?

Yes you were right sadly about the GE. I don't think you'll be proved right about Brexit being good for the UK though. And if its not good for the UK then it's very likely there will be a Scottish vote to leave the UK if there's no Single Market deal done. We'll have to see what happens in the next few weeks and months. Davis hasn't started too well, and May hasn't even formed a working Govt yet.

Happy to debate with you meantime though. If the thread doesn't get pulled like the Brexit one. :) What happened there ?

Tory voters should thank the SNP for helping them win two elections. First in 2015 when they ensured that voting for Labour would mean that the SNP were the tail wagging the dog. Second in 2017 when they hacked off enough Scots to help the Tories win 13 seats. Round of applause for Nicola.
