Fwiw MU, I'd probably leave them blocked - but then I like having a clear separation between work and everything else (I appreciate not everyone else is so anti-social :D) I'd also definitely be annoyed about them not meeting up - I suppose they could have thought that part of the evening was more of an optional thing (as they already had the expensive meal thing booked) - not that I think it was acceptable to just not turn up, not at all, just that maybe they didn't see it as a confirmed thing?

Little bit snowy here today. Cleared quite a bit off the car this morning but the roads were all clear. Started snowing again on the way to work so will be keeping an eye on that.....especially as there's a steep, curved drive to get out of the place.

Out of interest, when someone blocks you, if you try to look at their page, what do you see?

Nothing - you can't see their name or their page at all, it's as if they don't exist on FB.

Elsien & MU, I'm not surprised that you're annoyed/upset by other people's rubbishness. I hate people cancelling at the last minute and just not turning up is even worse. I don't know why people feel the need to accept invitations if they're not planning on going, I'd far rather they said no right at the start.

MU and elsien. That's really rubbish of people. I've noticed that people are getting really flakey about meeting up these days. Like they commit to everything and cancel at the last minute because something better has come up. I thought about having a party for a significant birthday in a few years - I wanted to do a whole white tie thing so people could get really dressed up, but I know people will say yes and then not show up because it's happened so many times. It even happened with a couple of people at our wedding. I didn't mind so much with the evening guests but it was £65 a head for catering so when 3 people don't bother showing up, then it's a lot of money wasted.

As for the Facebook thingy, if you don't want them on your page but they're insistent could you set up another profile just for work, so you can say whatever you want on your normal one? Probably a lot less hassle.

Speaking of fb, I accidentally sent a friend request to my old boss and he accepted it. This is awkward.

Ono - iirc it's a simile because of the use of the work like. It's been a ridiculously long amount of time since I studied English so I may be wrong.

Did they give you any explanation as to why they didn't turn up to the wedding? I can't get over how unbelievably rude that is!!

I was seriously considering not celebrating my 40th this year because I was so worried that it would end up with 5 people rattling round a far-too-big space but IzHe convinced me that I had to do something. I think that when it comes to confirming numbers for food I'll probably pick something about half way between confirmations and the people (IzHe, my parents, best mate etc.) I can guarantee will make it.

I'm pretty sure that's correct. A simile is a comparison which uses 'like' or 'as' and a metaphor is one which doesn't.

Two were friends of Mr CP and he hasn't spoken to them since. One was a colleague who said he was ill, so I gave him a pass. He could have said earlier though.

That's exactly what I worry about izzy. Just me and Mr CP rattling around in a massive room by ourselves because nobody has bothered to turn up. I think you do get more more people turning up if you send formal invites though because they're harder to ignore than a text or Facebook invitation.

Totally puts me off doing anything specific for big birthdays too (scarily, 40 is now just two years and a week away!)

Tea, you've gone very quiet on the subject of FOH. What's the situation now?

All quiet - amazingly! At some point I still need to sort out the garage stuff but as things are so nice and quiet for now am happy to ignore it for the sake of a quiet life.
