There used to be six of us in a big family house with me. dh and four dds. DDs have now moved out and I moved to a smaller and cheaper to run chalet bungalow on my own.

    Possible penguin

We lost DH in May last year and most decisions had tended to be family ones as we were all together so the idea of choosing things on the spur of the moment by myself was a bit strange.

I was quite badly depressed and had to go on medication but am now considering re assesssing it and being more positive and proactive.

Hoping that as the house takes shape I will get back to being "me" and getting some oomph back. Dds are great but I don't want to be a moaning myrtle and a burden. I want to be a help and resource.

Thanks for sharing that, Elona. I can see that it must be hard when you're not used to it.
Plus you've had a lot of huge changes in the last year or so, so it all takes a lot of getting used to, and re-evaluating.

It's early days, plus you have a sad anniversary coming up soon, too.
    :A

You have all of us on here, plus the well-stocked duvet fort!

On reflection, what you said about not wanting to be a burden........ I'm assuming your DDs are grown up, as they've left home, so there are times when they can be a help and support to you, too. You don't have to be the 'parent' all the time, but you can allow yourself to lean on them from time to time.

Middle dd is coming round tonight as she is going out for a drink with friends here and staying overnight with me. The rest of them are coming round for lunch tomorrow so look forward to showing them what has been done in the house so far.

I may have some furniture shifting for them and have some home made meals in the freezer to help them out as they are extra busy at work just now. It encourages me to cook properly and I know anything I freeze will be appreciated.

It may be as well that the downstairs needs so much work as it will be a "project" for me, I will know things are "safe" and not bodged and hope to have done most of it by summer and be able to both relax and spread my wings.

    Squish to all

What sort of things have you got planned for the downstairs?

Are you going to be doing the work yourself?

I dunno! All these expert DIYers on this thread! I've never been much good at it. I have done painting, a few times, but hated it. Have never tried hanging wallpaper.

Oh yes! I've been there! It is very funny!

He was quite a sport about it all, too, and saw the funny side!

I think he'll dine out on it for months! :rotfl:

Thanks for the slipper link, Pyxis. Unfortunately they still look too flat, I need something that really puts the foot at what looks like a nearly 45deg angle. Now I'm trying to find some summer shoes, still with a 2" heel or wedge, probably not slingback, suitable for a very high instep and with adjustment for one swollen ankle. Size 3.5, or maybe 3, if anyone is still reading!
Deal with things as they are, not as they should be.

The bungalow seems to be schixophrenic as the downstairs is like a
bodged 1980 's and upstairs is more modern although being cynical probably still bodged!!

The living room is being sorted out and my bedroom will be two bedrooms knocked into one. The hall will be left till last and the downstairs bathroom will be retiled with a modern loo and basin and a walk in shower and the kitchen will be ripped out and replaced so it works safely and efficiently eventually.

It will be worth it in the end but not a lot of fun getting there although a project would probably be good for me right now.
