Eugh, I am angry on your behalf WaS (even though you are probably not at all angry now). I've encountered a lot of church-leader people throughout my life - some good, some a bit rubbish, I can confidently say not one of them would have replied like that! I am truly astonished that anyone could think that was an appropriate response in any situation.

Am so annoyed that you made that huge brave move and encountered such a prize numpty for your efforts.

Pyxis - I know it's not your loss as such but I can't imagine what a shock that must've been. As you said though, at least it looks like she went quickly and painlessly, which is pretty much how everyone would hope to go. It sounds like everyone handled it brilliantly as well

WaS - I can't believe that anyone would ever think that was an appropriate way to respond to you, let alone someone who is meant to be trying to promote religion!!
It was so incredibly brave of you to reach out to someone religious and I am so angry that anyone, let alone someone who is meant to be Christian, could be that hateful. I hope you manage to find someone who can answer your questions sympathetically

Morning, hugs and squishes to all. Time for me to get on with the mountain of things I need to do today!!

Waves))) how awful of the priest to say that to you, knowing your past. I really detest the "if you don't turn to jesus you're satans spawn"

.I did some voluntary work a few years ago for a christian charity that helped sex trafficked women and girls. I attended their "training session", where a christian psychologist, explained the trauma related mental illnesses.. DID,BPD and PTSD as the women being possessed by satan, and their main aim was to bring them to their church,, Suffice to say I left after that.. People who have had trauma are suffering enough, making them even more afraid by telling them they are possessed will only add to their fears. BTW, I have a deep fear of churches too, linked to my mother, I'm not against religions per se,I do have my own version of spirituality, but the scaremongering that goes with some of the more extremists is not only not at all helpful, but potentially very damaging to someone who has experienced trauma, and an excuse to psychologically beat someone up via guilt and fear. I think that's when those kinds of people forget that the basis for all of them should first and foremost, be about love, not fear, and compassion for the person who has experienced something horrendous.

    (( Pyxis)) , what a shock :(
Many thanks to all who contribute on MSE :)

It makes me really :( and  to hear about these awful experiences.

I've been to some churches that were nicer than others - some that were a better fit for where I was in my life, some with more people I just got on with, some with better heating! But they've all been loving and lovely places, with people who genuinely cared. All of them have been tolerant and respectful of differing viewpoints and have made it clear that everyone's feelings and beliefs are valid.

It makes me very cross to think that you lovely people are getting such a bad deal!

Now, yesterday I didn't feel up to imparting some of the lovely knowledge I gained on my course this week, but am starting to feel better now.

Ooh, by the way, has anyone seen any really good April Fool tricks? I've had the TV on all morning, but not seen any.

Anyway, what do you think of the word treacle?
    (It's a lovely-sounding word, almost onomatopoeic!)

Where do you think it comes from?

    You'll be amazed!

    It actually means "wild animals"!

This isn't an April Fool joke, by the way!

    Here's the etymology:-

Treacle was a mid-14C antidote for poison.
In the 12C it was a cure for snakebite.

The word comes from the Vulgar Latin triacula
This comes from the Latin theriaca
which comes from the Greek theriake antidotas meaning an antidote for bites from poisonous animals.
(Note that the word antidotas meaning antidote had been lost by the time it entered Latin!)
Theriakos is Greek for a wild animal, being the diminutive of the word ther, meaning a wild animal.

    Good, isn't it?

It's actually very common to find words that are derived from the adjectives describing the words, in the original language, that have the current meaning of the word.
    For example, amethyst.
This comes from the Greek amethyien lithos, where amethyien means against drunkenness and lithos means stone. It was a remedy for drunkenness, you see. (The prefix a- signifies 'against' in Greek, and methi meant mead or wine.
Over the years, the lithos got dropped, so we have a gemstone called 'against drunkenness'! :rotfl:

    Taxi is another one.
It is short for taximeter cabriolet.
Taximeter meant you'd have to pay a measured fee, and cabriolet was the type of carriage, so it meant a fee-charging carriage, but we're left with taxi which is just the fee part!

  • WaS, I'm so glad you're feeling a bit more cheerful. What an utter plonker that priest is! Hopefully you can find someone more accepting should you decide to brave this course of action again. Have a big hug!

Pyxis - I'm so sorry regarding the lady on your course :(

    Afternoon everyone!

Pyxis, so sorry to hear about such a horrid experience. It happened on an orchestral tour I went on once, as well, and was a ghastly shock to us all. (In fact the whole tour was a bit of a disaster, but that's a tale for another day!) I hope your system has settled down from the shock now xxxxx

WaS - I am sooo appalled at that priest. I do wonder if he was from a rather strange offshoot of the church - some of his terminology was a bit odd. As it happened, I met with a priest this afternoon and asked him what he thought (all anonymous of course). He was appalled too!

The priest I met with was sent by the Bishop of London to find out about local MH services where I work, and I asked him if I could ask him a pastoral question at the end of our interview. He said that what he would expect from a priest contacted by you to help with a fear of churches would be for the priest to say 'how can I help?', to give compassionate listening (he really stressed that phrase), to offer a ministry of prayer if you wanted it, offer some fellowship if you wanted to meet other churchgoers and socialise in a non-church service setting (they have things like coffee mornings), and to have enough local knowledge to be able to signpost you to helpful services if that was useful for you. It doesn't sound as if any of this happened in the response you got. :(

Post that first one in DT and wait for it all to kick off. :rotfl:
How about this one for the animal lovers out there?

Pyxis, I want to do your course, it sounds fascinating. And if they could combine it with one about the origins of nursery rhymes that would be even better.
