It's like any professional person, be it a Minister, a Doctor, a MH therapist, or whatever, sometimes you hit on a gem, at other times you hit on a dud!
It's a real shame though, because hitting a dud can put you off that form of help for life, quite understandably.(I just lurve spiders!)

I may try again once I have finished licking my wounds. Tiny penguin I am still trying to figure out how telling someone who has been told she is the Devil's child since birth and that she will rot in Hell that the Devil is indeed controlling her and she won't go to Heaven is in anyway helpful? Is the idea to terrify me and to make me feel even worse about myself? End tiny penguin.Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened - Anatole France

Penguin for WaS
PENGUIN
I base this on the fact you said you emailed a priest. Many would say that the whole reason this particular denomination exists is indeed to scare people into submission. Please remember that the devil is nothing more than a social construct. A metaphor. He cannot get you and I'll tell you something, if he does put in an appearance then I'll come round myself and shove his pitchfork where the sun don't shine!.
I suspect a different flavour of Christianity, possibly a more progressive church, would be more helpful. Just like therapies, anti-depressants and OHs, we often have to try a few before we find the right one.

Hugs Pyxis, that sort of news can really be a shock, doesn't matter if it's someone you've known a long time or a short while.
WaS, while I'm not at all religious, eight years of RC schooling meant I encountered several priests during that time from the church the school was tied to. While it is less possible for a child to judge adult personalities, looking back at it some seemed like good caring people as one might hope a religious minister would be, a couple seemed completely detatched from normal life and one was a full on "fire and brimstone" type. It sounds like you got the latter kind, which would be absolutely not appropriate for you (or for anyone in my opinion, but it's not my faith so I probably shouldn't venture an opinion). I mention this only because you used the word "priest" and everyone I've known that's CofE has talked about their ministers as vicars rather than priests, so I associate the word with Catholicism.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
JM, you are a very, very kind person. I will pm you over the weekend.
WaS, brave lady you are to send that email - that is such a monumental step. Sometimes you have to get an unexpected response to help you seek out and appreciate an even better one. You are wonderful.
pyxis, sorry for your shock, and your coursemates, but what a lovely end still experiencing new people and new ideas and sitting down and reflecting on them in peace. Hope you feel better about it soon.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Hahahaha! that made me laugh, Surveyqueen!
Slightly more cheerful penguin
Thank you all, I have calmed down now and can kind of even find a glimmer of humour, this just my luck! I wasn't actually aware that Priests were part of a specific denomination, it was just the term my mother always used so it seemed a Priest was most likely able to answer my questions. Or not!
I certainly don't judge all people of faith as the same so once I feel better I will probably try again, it can't go horribly wrong twice, can it?
End penguin
Huge thank you to everyone who has replied for being so respectful of everyone's beliefs. The last thing I wanted was to upset anyone but I was just really upset myself. Thank you all again for being so wonderful and understanding, what a lovely bunch of kind and respectful people you are.Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened - Anatole France

WaS,
You could try forwarding your email and response (removing the priest's name) to the NSPCC. You could ask them if they knew of anyone who you could contact who would be able to answer your questions, or if they have any experience of some of the issues you raise and could guide you into untangling a truth about religion that is based on your thoughts and beliefs rather than twisted feelings.
I have had some excellent advice from the NSPCC in the past about young people I was particularly concerned with.
I realise as an organisation they may have to be religion-neutral and so may not be able to address your questions directly themselves. I guess I am trying to say send out some feelers and don't be disappointed if it takes a while to get responses that heal - thankfully your situation is not something that occurs for many people and I am sure you would not wish it on anyone.
You are amazing - I am not religious but littlewing and I would gladly accompany you and WaSp and your blanket and Sir Pugliet if ever you did want to step inside a church.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them.
