Melly, I meant to say earlier that I don't wash my hair more than about once a week, unless it's got dusty or something.

I might wet it, but I don't use shampoo, more than once a week. All the colouring over the years has made it very dry, and the more I shampoo it, the dryer it gets and the quicker the colour fades!

So I wouldn't worry about that.

Anyway, some one on TV did an experiment and agreed not to wash her hair for several weeks, just to brush it often, and she said that after a couple of weeks, the natural oils, which we strip out with shampooing, rebalanced, and her hair felt all right after that!

My mother didn't wash her hair for months in her last couple of years. She wouldn't do it and she wouldn't let anyone else do it. She only combed it. I cut it for her, and was surprised to find that it wasn't greasy, felt fine, didn't look dirty, and didn't smell dirty. And her scalp wasn't flaky. I didn't worry about it after that!

  • You are right, Pyxis. Once when I was very ill I didn't wash at all for 6 months (did I just admit to that?) but my hair was amazing! It was soft and silky and looked very clean because it was naturally cleansing itself. One's scalp will look after itself if you can stand the period beforehand where it remembers how to self cleanse.

  • Does this sound silly?

I am thinking of writing to my favorite psychiatrist and thanking him for helping me. He was the one who was there for me after my first psychotic break and stayed with me for the following 7 years. He put me therapy after therapy, always supervising my therapists for consistency and basically made me human again. He was the first person to openly tell me that I hated myself and promised me that if I worked with him that he could stop me needing residential care by giving me the tools I needed to help myself. Well, it has been 15 years since I last saw him and so far it has worked, I still live independently. Due to his patience and determination to treat each of my disorders one by one he did indeed give me the tools I needed.

I have no idea if he will even remember me but I am hoping that as he worked with me for 7 years that he will. He is a Very Important Person in the psychiatric community now and very famous within his field so would it be silly to write to him and say I just wanted to say thank you and that what you did worked?

I would love to say oh, I am working and have my own house and have never looked back, but that wouldn't be true and I doubt he would have thought that would happen anyway. I would have liked to give him a total success story if I contacted him again but then maybe where I am now is a success considering how unwell I initially was. All of that aside, I miss him, he was someone I trusted and liked very much and it would be lovely to be in touch.

Fantastic idea, WaS! Go for it!

I'm sure he would remember you!

And you are his success story.....you said yourself that without all that therapy and help, you'd have to be institutionalised, so he has helped to keep you out of hospital!

Just had a phone call from Shelter, they have closed my case. Apparently, living in a sewage pit, with stairs I can't manage, still isn't enough to get me up to Band A . I feel utterly defeated :(

I think it would be lovely to write to him WaS, just to thank him and let him know how things are. I wrote a letter to my CPN thanking her for her support and that i was working again, never heard back but i hope she knew how much her support meant to me :)

I has good news! <y best friend has insisted i go to the one day festival in may and has bought me a ticket for my 30th birthday! She and another girl have rented an apartment place so shes told me all i need to do is save up some spending money. I'm so thankful and so excited! This is the one thing i really wanted to for my birthday and now its happening!

Need to sort out dvla/bus pass and PIP this week....argghh this month has gone too damn quickly. Need to get my head out of the sand.

Also though other good news, Swain has just got his new (double) contract through, he starts back in 3 weeks :) hopefully he might get made perm this year!

  • Glad you don't think it is a silly thing to do, Pyxis and MU! My story does feature in one of his books so hopefully he will remember me. I am slightly put off by how important he is now, he ran his own department when I knew him but he now trains other psychiatrists, has published many books and is an honoured lecturer of the Psychiatry Association. If I met him now I'd probably be too terrified to talk to him. :rotfl:

He promised me he could give me the tools to keep me out of residential care if I cooperated and it really worked, I do want him to know that. I think I might risk an email.

That is great news, MU! I am so glad that you get to go to the event that you wanted to! Well done to Swain too, crossing everything that it works out for him.

I wouldn't worry too much about the PIP form, the same company that handles those also handles ESA forms and as I said it has taken 14 weeks for mine and it hasn't even got to an assessor yet. It will likely be months before you hear anything once you send the form off. I can't decide whether this is good or bad really!

Argh, how annoying Faerie! Can you ask them for the details of why it isn't enough? It sounds enough to me!

    Yes, MessedUp, that's super news!

I meant to post and tell you to go for it and buy yourself a ticket, as you'd be buying memories, but then I got side-tracked.

Am really pleased, you're going! And free accom too! :T
