Thinking of applying for AQA but concerned about the self-employment issues. Does this mean filling in a self-assessment tax form every year and paying class 2 NI contributions? Additionally do you have to declare your home as business premises and if so does this have ramifications for home insurance, utilities and so on?

It was my first application, with 12 questions.

Apply again whilst they're still recruiting, there's no limit on how many tries you can have and quite a few people have got through on here after more than one application.

    Good luck :)

Yes, you would have to do a self-assessment tax form. You would pay Class 2 NI if you don't have any other employment (but I get very confused over whether you have to pay if this is a second job - have a look at the cutting tax board for discussion).

As far as I am aware, you don't have to 'declare' your home as a business to the council (because you won't be having visitors to your house, or making more noise or rubbish etc). It doesn't make any difference to your utilities, but if you wanted you could claim a proportion of your bills as expenses for your tax return (theoretically that could make you potentially liable for some CGT when you sell your house, although that is a very small risk - have a look on the cutting tax board for discussions). With home insurance, you should ask your insurer - I'm with Virgin, and they are happy with work of that type from home.

If your net profits are less than the Small Earnings Exception limit, currently £4635, then you don't need to pay the Class 2 NI (which is about £2.20 a week IIRC) but you do have to fill in a form to get yourself excepted.

OK and thanks! I'll definitely have another go as I had a lot of fun answering the questions. Fingers crossed

  • Ok, i've just finished the application form and the 2 hour test thing. How long did everyone else take to do this test? It's taken me about 50 minutes. Does that seem like i've dragged or rushed?

Also, how do AQA pay you and how regularly?

Finally, exactly WHAT is this 30 question test thing all about? Is it over the phone, online etc?

    50 minutes sounds about right.

AQA pay directly into your bank, during the first week of the month. If any month you have earned less than £20 it's carried over to the next month. They pay on the dot, no waiting around to be paid.

Once you are accepted and have done your induction you have to answer 30 questions, then stop. These will then be reviewed by a Senior Researcher and you have to reach a certain percentage in content, length and SPG (spelling, grammar, punctuation). If all is ok you are then allowed to answer as many as you like. At the beginning you will have a similar review about once a month. As time goes on this stretches to 2 or 3 months.

    Good luck!
  • Mine took 50 minutes to do as well
