Where does 'north' begin?

Actually I know the midlands exists of course, but I do really think of it as part of the north.
I mean it's north - south divide, not north - Midlands - south divide.
I've been to derby & Lincolnshire, I thought they were both the north.
North of Northampton & Cambridgeshire is about right I think.0 -
Got it now.
North starts at Shropshire, Staffordshire, Lincolnshire & Leicestershire0 -
We have a friend who has a family home in Sussex and a small flat in Marylebone, London. He says anything North of Regents Park is "Too North"
I live in South Bucks (so, "too north") and know that officially Birmingham is midlands, but Birmingham is the point I struggle to understand the accent...so I consider it North!0 -
Birmingham gets Midlands Today (in fact, most of Midlands Today is about Birmingham) so it's clearly Midlands.0

My boss is from Birmingham and complains when we call him Northern. My response is he should talk properly if he doesn't want to be mistaken for a Northerner.
For me, The North is a concept, more than a geographic location. Somewhere they talk funny and where life is a bit yokel, but the locals are oblivious to it (sometimes even proud of it). I'd quite happily classify parts of Cornwall and Wales as The North, in much the same way as I would put parts of Idaho into the Deep South.0 -

Midlands down the M1 to about Junction 10, and across, the rest is The South.
Where else would one park tanks?
I've stood on the M62 a few times... usually cleaning vomit from a child or having one pee, or having a car break down.. there are usually many people stood on it.. the roadworks have been going on since the Roman invasion!
I've stood on the M1 too.. and pretended I was Penelope Pitstop because it was like wacky races
The Scots have Hadrians wall... so us short a$$ 'northerners' can't invade.. it is all relative.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
I wondered how long it would take for Watford to get mentioned. It is weird how Watford Gap is actually nowhere near Watford!Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010
