I have lived in Birmingham for over 40years and for me it is as North as I ever want to go.I much prefer the South.

All these regional words and terminology for the other thread got me wondering, where does North begin?

For me, it's from Hertfordshire upwards :D

I'm a Londoner, and to me the North starts "North of the Watford Gap".

I'm always amused by people who say north of Watford Gap as being north when they are really thinking of Watford.

Watford is just off the M25 whereas Watford Gap Services being north of Northampton is probably just about north if you divide England into two (north to south).

Watford Gap is near the village of Watford, I assume many like you say mean Watford off the M25.

  • It's hilarious how clueless some of the southerners are. :rotfl:

The north begins at Watford. Or Birmingham! Or even anywhere north of Sussex or Kent.

I think they need to go get a few Geography lessons! :rotfl:

And Watford would be a stupid cut off. You've got St. Albans just north of it, and that's definitely 'in the south'.

Watford Gap makes a lot of sense as the 'gateway to the South' but I wouldn't say the north (since you've then ignored the midlands).

I would draw a line just above Nottingham and call that the North. You'd need to make sure to go under Stoke, since that's certainly Northern and not Midlands.

My definition of where the north starts is anywhere north of the junction where the M18 joins the M1 (just south of Doncaster).

Whenever I'm driving I always feel like I've left the 'north' once I get off the M18 and onto the M1 - can't explain why but I do!

One of the signs on the M6 does state 'The North' as a destination - prob several of them do but can't remember where they start. Oddly, I don't recall any in the opposite direction stating 'The South' but I guess there are.

I was brought up in Portsmouth and remember being very excited as a child when we had to drive to Rugby for some reason. It would be my first trip away from the south, and I wasn't sure what to expect. Would it all be like Coronation Street, or full of smoke belching factories?

We seemed to have been driving for ages, and already things looked very different, so I asked my father if we were in the north. The reply was "don't be silly, we haven't even left Hampshire yet!"
