In my younger days it used to be where the streetlights ceased after leaving London on the M1 (around Watford?). I fear now the southerners have pushed the boundary further north though...

Actually it goes from Liverpool to Hull and passes by Manchester!
Yeah but who wants to go to Liverpool? ;)

Anyway, I love how the road signs out of London point to "The North" as if it's a separate country.

I live in Bristol. A lot here say that "North" is either that the M4/M5 interchange or anywhere past Gloucester

The south is everywhere below Hereford, Worcester, Northampton, Cambridge, and Warwick.

The north is everywhere above Derby, Stoke-on-Trent, Nottingham, and Wrexham.

The Midlands is everything between Hereford, Worcester, Northampton, Cambridge, and Warwick: and Derby, Stoke-on-Trent, Nottingham, and Wrexham.

  • I live not far from Watford Gap and probably on that imaginary line from the Wash to the Severn, and do not consider that to be the north. We live in the Midlands, although having lived most of my life in Hertfordshire, I really consider myself to be a Southerner!
  • I'm firmly in the North - Merseyside. Cheshire upwards is the North.
