Where does 'north' begin?

In my eyes, draw a line across the bottom of the peak district national park. Anything below that is South England.
I'm from the Peak District and to me, it's not 'the North'. It's classed as the East Midlands until you get towards Sheffield, so for me North starts in Sheffield (somewhere round about Fox House). I suppose if I had to draw a (wobbly!) line it would be at the top of the Peak District, with Lancashire, Yorkshire Greater Manchester being the North, and Cheshire, Derbyshire etc being the Midlands. To me the South doesn't start until you hit Wiltshire.
OH's dad never liked me and one of the reasons was because he said I was a 'Northerner' and he said that OH should be with a 'Southern' girl as he was a 'Southern' man. It really used to irritate me as I don't see myself as Northern at all!
One thing I do think is interesting is how much the Peak District accent has changed. Growing up, people tended to sound much more 'Derby' but the last few times I've been up there the accent seems to have shifted and its much more Mancunian. It was really noticeable the last time I was wandering round Buxton.0 -
Well the whole country is fairly northerly within the northern hemisphere. So really we're all northerners.
But if we're just talking about England. I'd agree that you draw a wobbly line from the Mersey to the Humber, making sure to include all of South Yorkshire.
Do another wobbly line between the Wash and the Severn, everything below that is Southern England.
Everything between those two lines - Northern line and the Southern line is the Midlands.
I remember when I first went to University, Dundee in Scotland, and flat mate was on phone to his mum talking about his flat mates.
Said who I was and that I was English.
"Oh God! He's not one of those awful bloody southerners is he!?" Was her response.
"No Mum, he's from Yorkshire"
"Oh! That's alright then!"

Cheshire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cumbria form the North West.
Cleveland, Durham, Tyne and Wear and Northumbria make up the North East.
Derbyshire falls in to East Midlands so is effectively not the north.
South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and Humberside (including the bit south of the ah Humber) for Yorkshire and Humberside. I think every Yorkshireman would argue that this is the north.

I don't think of anywhere in England being north, really, because relative to me it's all south - but of course I recognise that England is a country and does indeed have a north (probably Manchester area upwards).
So I guess it depends on whether the discussion is about the north of Scotland, the north of England, or simply the north of the UK.
This always tickles me - I'm from Scotland, now live in the Midlands. To me, where I live now is the South. To people living in England, and especially south of the top of the M25, where I live now seems to be described as the North. My daughter refuses to accept that where we live is the North - she says we are in the Midlands, so we're the middle, neither North nor South :rotfl:.0 -
Anywhere North of Northampton. Scotland isn't North, it's abroad.
I live in Sussex so pretty much everything is north to us.0 -
