What is swear down?
Used it in the context "I swear down if he carries on I'm gunna smack him"
It's a way of saying that you are telling the truth but actually you're probably just talking a load of bs because in fact you're not hard or tough you are in fact a wannabe gangster

Thanks, I honestly never heard it, though I am from Ireland, I'm sure we have our own unique style of getting the same message across!0 -

"Back in the day" for me as well. I just want to say, when? Please be specific.
People who order an expresso in a coffee shop. There is no X people.
This one makes me fume "I seen a lovely bag, or I seen that on the news" You know who I am talking about, almost everyone in Northern Ireland!!! On the plus side I do love the overuse of the word wee here. Will I put that in a wee bag for you? That's your wee receipt! I always think it sounds friendly!!0 -
I hate bad grammar eg We was, I were....
I despise poor spelling, especially where it renders a sentence unintelligible eg confusion between where and were.
However sometimes predictive text or a typing error is the cause.
I tolerate mispronunciation but I cringe inwardly when I hear pronounciation, and skellington ( skeleton) or sustificate (certificate).
I would like to get out my red pen when I read Apple's instead of apples.
I loathe the current misuse of epic and iconic.
However, I do find the regional variants most interesting. How many different words for path can we find? Alley, ginnel, snicket, jitty ....
I enjoyed learning new expressions when I lived in Yorkshire eg give back-word, meaning to go back on your word, drop out.
We were once invited for "supper" and mistakenly did not eat beforehand, not realising that we would not be given a proper meal, just some cake and (what else?) cheese. Now I always refer to an evening meal, rather than tea, dinner or supper.
I find this topic fascinating, distinguishing between that which is wrong, that which is regional or generational, and that which is uneducated or lazy. I am more tolerant of laziness in speech than in writing.
Any mistakes in what I have written are produced by my i-pad, not by me.0 -

What's your wee address? Do you find that we are being asked that all the time now?0 -
I hate "lay" instead of lie, "sat" or "stood" instead of sitting or standing.
"Deteriate" instead of deteriorate, and in book reviews on Amazon I frequently see books "defiantly recommended"
"Drawring" is another one, instead of drawing, and many, many more!0 -
"Obviously"
Actually, you're wrong.
It's not obvious at all.
I had to sit through a presentation as part of a course last year. The lady was full of "obviously"
I got bored so decided to count how many times she used the word "obviously" in a fifteen minute talk.

I think it what Americans and radio news people call a power "cut".
A Power Outage is an unplanned disruption; a Power Cut is a planned one e.g. as a result of strikes in the 1970s.I need to think of something new here...0
