It has been pointed out to me that the place for general chat on this forum is The Inn, as I don't visit that thread very often I spent a while in there this morning. I scrolled all the way back to the beginning of the year and made the following observations. (Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong about anything ;) )

There are loads of colourful bright pictures.

The banter is very friendly.

There seems to be about a dozen or so regular users who seem to know each other quite well, in fact dare I say it seems to be quite an elite clique.

They even have their own language, most of which I have no idea what it means :o

The chat is anything from the weather, family, haggis, nits , and even a little bit of comping chucked in :rotfl:

As I said I scrolled back to the beginning of the year (which was quite a few pages!!!) and I never saw a single post by a Board Guide or The Forum Team.

So now for my questions

Three times a "funny" thread has been opened and twice it has been closed, should it be opened in The Inn if that is where the general conversations go?

Would the people in The Inn feel put out if you had an influx of compers coming in to post funny posts and have a laugh?

Do you feel you get away with a little bit more in The Inn because that is the place for general conversation? As I said you don't seem to be moderated as strictly as the rest of the chat forum :)

Would the compers who don't normally use The Inn to chat move threads? As I said you seem quite a tight clique and some folks may feel like they are intruding.

Now that The Inn is at part 45 and 386 pages long do you think if it was started afresh more folks would be inclined to use it?

I will post this on the forum and in The Inn please let me have your thoughts :D

I don't know for certain why the 2 threads you mention were removed, as I keep pointing out the rules state the forum team won't normally give an explanation when they remove content from the forum
my guess is that it has nothing to do with them being 'funny' and more to do with publishing people's comments on another website without their permission

The Inn is there so that compers can chat about anything without clogging up this board allowing genuine comping questions to be seen, not pushed down the board, yes the people that post in there regularly 'know' each other but have always seemed happy to welcome new patrons :)

alternatively there are the Arms and Discussion Time boards for fun threads :)

I don't visit the Inn as I just don't have time to wade through everything to find what I am looking for.

If a new one is open then I might look occasionally, but it won't become a regular thing.

Haven't been in the Inn for ages and rarely posted but when I did people were perfectly friendly, not particularly cliquey at all.

Have lurked in DT but wouldn't dream of posting in there , at least not without a flamethrower to hand :rotfl:

Surely the real issue is threads being removed with no warning and no right of appeal. As many have pointed out, the comments being discussed are quotes from material which has been put out into the public domain. I am not aware that the original author of the comment retains any sort of copyright and some of the comments one sees on the original posting are truly horrendous, far removed from the gentle ribbing they receive on here.

One can only presume MSE is so terrified of any sort of negative comment they are very easily manipulated into removing threads which displease only a very small number of people.

Quotes were pasted on the threads but without the author's name so it was not like 'naming and shaming'. As it has been said previously - if an author chooses to post a comment on a Facebook or Twitter then they posted it knowing that it could be viewed and possibly discussed by members of the public.

On media forums, such as The Daily Mail, members are able to comment under news articles. I often do. Everyone has different views and everyone is able to express how they feel about the article. On all three threads that were deleted on this forum, I never once saw any bullying, witch hunting or naming and shaming behaviour. It was just a bit of fun, somewhere to have a laugh with fellow compers.

Had a look in The Inn
and don't really see the point in it.
Could those half dozen not just message each other on facebook?

When Compers Chat Corner was set up, the whole point was to be able to chat freely about anything, comping related or not. Obviously, not if it breaks any MSE rules, and not to post stuff here that clearly belongs somewhere else - so it's not the place to post competitions, for example.

There have been plenty of non-comping related threads running here.

The Inn is fine for those who enjoy using it, but if someone posts a topic there, it's quickly lost as people add new posts. This was all discussed and sorted ages ago, when the board was first set up.

It shouldn't really matter to me, because I rarely chat here anymore, but having been slightly involved in Compers Chat Corner being set up, I am a little sad to see unnecessary rules and restrictions.being applied. Why not let people choose for themselves if they want to chat at the Inn, or on this board? What harm does it do if there is a little overlap?

Just 'hide' controversial conversations in the Inn, then? ;)
  • I would rather a thread specific for the "getting the memo" type conversation personally as I enjoyed reading it and contributing but haven't the time to siv through the generic chatter posts of the inn.

Theres no reason for it to be deleted providing people mentioned within the thread remain unidentifiable/unnamed...

Or better still, perhaps the easily offended could simply not open/read the thread?
  • I agree -a little gentle banter amongst like minded people should not be a problem.
I have come across some harsh critical comments from some people when a simple comping question has been asked from a Newbie(we have all been there)-others go the extra mile to help.-just a cross section of people on here - some helpful ,others not so!
I can't understand threads being removed-maybe just remove nasty comments or unhelpful responses.Often useful information comes from these threads. If you can laugh at yourself you can laugh at others!

Thanks for all your replies :T

There have been some really good comments made.

I think we should just keep our "You gotta laugh" thread going and if we do something wrong and it is closed open "You gotta laugh 1" "You gotta laugh 2" ect.

I don't think we would be clogging up the board by having just one thread ;)
