Money Moral Dilemma: Should I ask my partner to pay me for childcare?

  • Yeah go for it.

Let us know how it goes down.

Don't forget to charge for any meals you cook, laundry you do etc too, whilst deducting for any breaks, for instance if you check in on personal e-mails whilst child is napping.

And personal favours. Don't forget those! You could create a 'menu' in your spare time.

Life is just one big financial transaction after all.

Gosh, Marley is a SAHD. Should I be paying him childcare rates for looking after our son? :D

    Is he really?!

That's cool. Stay at home dads are quite rare too. Good for him. :)
  • What a load of nonsense
£15900 loan (including interest) over 3.5 years to pay off...can I do it sooner???

  • It's probably better to put all your money in together if you are a family, rather than thinking of it as 'my money' and 'his money'.

Not in our families ... my brother was doing it 15 years ago, before it was more common; and Marley has a nephew who is also SAHD :D

I'm not going to start paying him, he'll want combined childcare, cleaner, gardener and head chef rates :rotfl:

  • Why didn't you discuss finances before you had a kid?
This dilemma makes no sense but I suppose if this hypothetical couple keeps all their finances entirely seperate, all the time, and she saves him money on his 50% of childcare costs by staying at home a few days a week she could reasonably charge him for either the childcare or loss of earnings. I'd expect a proper invoice on letterheaded paper to be drawn up though. Price comparisons done and hazard pay charged for nappy changes.
  • Weird...

Is this trying to save up for when they separate in the future?

    this person is thinking:

"Yikes, my income is a lot lower than it was... I'm losing out because of this... I'd struggle financially if I were to separate from my partner... So I'm going to get them to pay me for those lost working days...

As a form of divorce insurance!?

    OR

Is it that they are accustomed to a certain lifestyle which they are unable to pursue with their new lower income? (as they keep income separate apart from bills)

So they want their partner to pay them to make up for it.

Either way it sounds stupid to me.

Maybe what you need to do is actually have a proper look together at how you're managing your finances and budget.

Do you need to budget better to ensure you both have an appropriate level of spending money each after bills and saving?

See we share our incomes, all into one account, bills go out then we have a budget for personal spending (we never spend anywhere near it!) any major purchases would be a joint decision.

Really? Are they that bored at MSE Towers that this is the best fake scenario they could come up with?

    They just get more ridiculous.

Nah they just all live at home or are single ;)
