I did everything.... reboots, CCleaners, let the Avira thing run, tried to shut down processes before they kicked off ..... things were hanging, it'd take nearly half an hour to shut down at times.
I've got it working for now though .... I suspect there might be some hardware thingy that's about to fail catastrophically. I really should investigate buying a new PC, except I don't know how to choose one - and I've not used any modern OSs, so scared of them as I have tried to use my sibling's laptop in the past and failed catastrophically to understand how to use the darned thing.
Bring back XP .... there's nowt wrong with XP ....
EDIT: Managed to uninstall Avira and reinstall it. That seems to have been the root of the problem... but as it gets control of processes before you can it can be difficult to outwit it so you can uninstall it.... got it in the end though.
I have ditched Avira and gone over to Sophos, which seems less troublesome.
You've been thinking about getting a new PC for ages. Doesn't your present one have a tiny hard disk and very little RAM?No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
Another day, another 300 quid of income taken away (TSB, Halifax)
(yes that is an ironic smile)

Yes, I have to run CCleaner every day.
Empty it's 40GB HD. I've got that partitioned into two drives; one's got 700MB left on it. I've probably got about 4GB spread between the two drives.
RAM's 2MB probably. No larger, might be smaller.0 -

My tablet runs windows 10 fine with 2gb of RAM and a 16GB 'hard drive' My main PC has 2GB RAM and a 32GB SSD that is for the OS and apps (that used to be called programs). To be fair it does have 2TB of other hard disks and I have 1TB of could storage backup for photos.
IF your PC can boot from a USB stick you can create one of those chromebook images and boot into that which is often useful for hardware that really won't run windows anymore (basically less than 2GB of RAM and any version of windows when you put on the 'required for security' service packs).I think....0 -

3 questions:- Is the HD interface IDE or SATA?
- If you could identify the interface AND someone sent you a larger HD, would you know how to fit it?

Would something like this be infinitely better Pastures:

This is just one example. There are plenty more where that came from. We've been buying all of our laptops and desktops from the factory outlet for about 15+ years and they are great value for money. They aren't necessarily exactly what you want, but they are cheap and infinitely better. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? They are 5 mins walk away and she said they were having some sort of communal build (perhaps only putting the leaves on) on Saturday and there were no convenient days before then.I think....0

Link bad.
In the past I've bought from ebuyer.
This PC cost me £200 in 2006, I think I need a PC, not a laptop.
So many choices/decisions it's too much for me really.
I'd like a PC the size of a cornflake packet and a new keyboard wouldn't go amiss. This one lost its letters years ago.0
