Well I'm feeling much better today. Yesterday was bleh. It was also nice and sunny too although coolish, just 16C (61F in old money). We've got 24C penciled in for tomorrow which is nice.0 -
Good on her! Spending the kids (or taxman's) inheritance. What else would she do with it?
My parents are the opposite, they are so paranoid about running out of money that they are really scared of actually spending any and having fun. Silly thing is dad planned for his retirement really well and he receives more in pension monthly than he did in salary (his final salary was nowhere near shoddy as a corporate manager) plus they have mum's pension on top and less outgoings as they don't have his commuting, suits, coffees or meals out costs that they did before.
She had given me such a sob story about not having enough money and they had to be careful that I suggested applying for pension credit thinking they were on low money...until mum said their savings were too high and even if they weren't, just one of dad's pensions was too much.
Edit - I'm not jealous or judging them, I just think the really lean times when dad had his accident have left a mark on them. Money was so tight back then with 2 young children to feed that perhaps with dad now not working due to retirement, it reminds them of those bad times and makes them resort back to the money saving ways they had to employ at the time to survive. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
When I get to pension age I'll just have whatever the state pension is at the time, plus any "minimum income" style top ups, like they get now.
I won't feel poor at all... I'll feel well off.
The main difference between retirement and employment years is that once you've got your pension, whatever it is, you know it's coming.
During employment years you don't know what you'll get next week. You could have a job today, but not tomorrow. Next month's job could pay half. Even on benefits something could be slashed, or withdrawn, or investigated and you get nothing.
That "I know it'll keep coming at that rate" must be a nice warm feeling of certainty, no matter how much/little it is, it's a known amount. You can plan.0 -

Thanks CKhalvashi. As you probably guessed, I'm very hot on safety.

I called Transco once, because my CO alarm was going off. In fact, I suspected it was just the low battery alarm, so I took the alarm out into the garden whilst I was still on the phone. I explained to the Transco operator that it was just an occasional beep and it was continuing outside in the garden. She still sent someone round.
I'm not surprised GDB2222. I've always found Transco (now the National Gas Emergency Service) to be very good at responding to any hint of a problem where gas is concerned.

You don't get training like that these days...
Televisions used to store current in very high voltage capacitors which could discharge through you if you opened the back and touched the wrong part (even while it was unplugged). All TV engineers would know how to avoid that.

I smelt gas once... called out the Transco lot. Fella turned up and measured it .... then cut off the fire gas supply ... and said "I've no idea how you managed to smell that; it's not safe, but the reading was so miniscule it's unbelievable you detected it".
Part of my ASD is over-sensitivity to some smells.... I guess gas is one of them.0
