I suspect it is because we use gas to heat our house that has solid walls with no cavities to fill. Add to that the rooms we use most are north facing.

Eon has a comparison of similar homes nearby and we are well within the range.

Oh good, that sounds all right then :)

(Edited because I've only just realised I used a sad emoticon where I'd meant to use a smiling one

I guess most of us resort to our phones when we lose broadband in which case low badwidth stuff is useful.

Apparently it was the DNS so you could change your ip settings to use the google DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

I had somethign similar with skyBB 2 nights ago and found th DNS was hard coded on my router but obviosuly you can change it on individual PCs but harder for STBs and other devices.

It's a code for "you fiddle with stuff you don't understand, thereby ensuring that while the rest of the country's back online, you're not as you did something wrong ... and you don't know what"

    My response is:
    - reboot, see if I can get online
    - wait
    - reboot,
    - wait

It'd be 1-2 days before I sought other ways to fix it ... waiting usually works.

I'm glad we had this discussion... just lost broadband again.

If we'd not had the discussion, then I'd have feared that there was something wrong with my PC/equipment/broadband account

silvercar We had very high gas bills and thought it was just because of the cost of gas, but it turned out we had a leak in one of the pipes  and had to decamp to a hotel for a couple of nights (as it was winter), while it was fixed,
It might be an idea to have your gas supply checked just in case :)

Sorry to intrude silvercar but just spotted that you think you might have a gas leak. Don't take any chances. As ivyleaf says, if you do have a leak and can smell gas, please call the National Gas Emergencies helpline on 0800 111 999 straightaway. They'll be with you within two hours to assess the situation and make things safe.

Also, please turn off the gas supply using the handle attached to the emergency control valve. This can usually be found next to the gas meter. Turn the handle a quarter turn so the lever is at 90 degrees to the emergency control valve's body.

Open all doors and windows (if electric, open them manually). Don't switch the gas supply back on until the Gas Emergency services have been. If applicable, don't go into a cellar if the meter is located there as there may be a build-up of dangerous fumes. Don't turn light switches on or off, use doorbells, phones or any other electrical items which could cause a spark. Don't smoke, light a match or do anything that could cause ignition.

Sorry if this appears over the top silvercar but always concerned when people mention gas leaks.

    Thanks Malc,

I never mentioned gas leaks. I certainly can't smell one and Eon tells me that my usage is within the range of neighbouring houses.

Also we had a CO leak not so long ago and engineers swarming over the house checking it out, so I'm confident that we are safe.

That's fine silvercar. As long as you're safe. Sorry but I see gas leak and go into safety mode automatically.

    Thanks for letting me know.

Completely agree with E.ON's reaction to this. Well done Malc!

I called Transco once, because my CO alarm was going off. In fact, I suspected it was just the low battery alarm, so I took the alarm out into the garden whilst I was still on the phone. I explained to the Transco operator that it was just an occasional beep and it was continuing outside in the garden. She still sent someone round.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
