Never heard of Heron foods so I assume it's a regional store?

Based in Yorkshire but stores in the East Midlands.

How long after opening something like meat or fish do other people keep it in the fridge for? I'll open say chicken mini fillets or 2 pieces of fish on say Saturday, use some of it one evening, put the remainder in a food bag and put it back in the fridge. Sometimes I won't get round to using the rest till the following Saturday. But some people I know won't do that or if something's stated as going off on a particular day, immediately it will going in the bin, they won't eat it the next day even if the original packet hasn't been opened.

I bought some reduced roast beef from Tesco deli counter last Monday and had a sandwich with it today.
Smelled fine, tasted fine. I'll finish the rest off tomorrow.

Re Branston beans - you can usually get 3 for a pound at Poundworld. I know there are occasionally slightly better deals on 4-packs elsewhere but there are usually only pennies in it.

Poundworld and Poundland also usually stock the larger bottles of Daddies sauce and Daddies ketchup as well.

I never do, if I open uncooked meat and am not using the whole pack I freeze the rest, then if I defrost I use the day its defrosted. Cooked meat I will keep for 2-3 days. Never keep leftover fish (there never is any anyway but if there was I wouldn't keep it). however something like a ham I'll keep till its all gone, nothing lasts too long here anyway.

It takes literally 20 mins to make a large stockpot full of soup which will easily make a dozen portions, costing just a few quid. Not much planning and barely any fuel costs. Buy fruit & veg in season or at reduced price in the supermarket.

I made 24 portions of soup for less than £5 yesterday - carrot & coriander, potato & leek and a Moroccan spicy lentil soup. I spent less than an hour in the kitchen making them!

This book was an absolute godsend when I first went insolvent http://www.amazon.co.uk/Covent-Garden-Soup-Companys-Soups/dp/075220503X/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1454929121&sr=1-3&keywords=new+covent+garden+soup+book (copies available for 1p!). The most expensive I found to be Cream of Fennel at @£1.96 for 6 portions. I would make different types and freeze them in portion sizes. ;)

Where do you get 40p a day? They're £1 a can in the supermarket!

For £1 I can buy enough veggies to make soup for the entire week, let alone one meal!
2 for $1 at Shop Rite's can can sale.
