I've made tomato soup with tinned chopped tomatoes and it tasted great.

I've never actually thought of trying that. I usually just make up tomato based sauces for various meals, depending what herbs I have available or I find reduced.

Talking of which, I've just popped down my local Co-op for a bottle of wine so had a quick reccy at the reduced produce section, as I usually do. I picked up a bag of carrots and a pack of coriander for 10p each, plus I then spotted a loaf of freshly baked artisan bread (cheese & jalapeño pepper) over in the bread aisle for 39p, so that's a week's worth of lunches sorted for less than a £1.

The only extras needed (which I have in stock already) are an onion, a stick of celery, a potato, 1tsp ground coriander and 2tsp bouillon powder, but all still come within the £1 so it's basically 20p per lunch for great quality, nutritious nosh! :T:p

Wouldn't it be good to use tomato puree also?

    What size tins were they?
The 4 x 410gm are currently on half price offer at £1.27 instead of £2.55.
4x410 normal offer price is £1.27 this was 64p for over a week back in Sept/Oct

So the normal offer price is £2.55 and half price is £1.27.
I can't imagine that the 'normal offer price' has doubled in a few months.

Wouldn't you need to eat the reduced cooked chicken the same day maybe the next day? I don't think it would last 5 days....6 days if you count the day of purchase. If you were to freeze it wouldn't it have to be eaten immediately rather than reheated and kept for 4 hours until lunch.
Cooked meat will keep for 3-4 days in the fridge
Mon, Tues from the fridge wed would be OK as well(still just under 3 days if bought close to closing Sun) but go for 3 portions frozen make sarnie on the day at work(take the chicken in a cooler bag to keep cold longer.

In the old days granny would cook a ham and it would sit in the larder getting bits cut off it for a week.

I had no idea the 'food shopping' board existed.

    There's even a thread about Heron Foods/Farmfoods.
Here's a link to the thread and an extract from the first post explaining about Heron Foods:
    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4931730
I am lucky enough to have a branch of Heron Foods in my town. It's a discount freezer chain, similar to Farmfoods (but a bit better in my opinion). It stocks heavily discounted brand names and unbranded foods at rock bottom prices.
so now we know (well, those who hadn't heard of Heron Foods). :)

We have a Farmfoods in the vilage where my Mum & sis live so I check it out on a weekly basis.
We also have a Jack Fultons which is similar to Farmfoods.
Got some fab Quaker Oats Oat-so-simple instant porridge in JF the other day - honey & vanilla, much nicer than the other varieties.
Not seen this variety anywhere else so I'm guessing this is a one-off. I bought the entire stock (7 boxes = 70 packets).
They sell a lot of short date/just out of date stuff.

The Food Shopping & Groceries board is one I'm going to be visiting now I know it's there.

Re your price for Branston beans - I think you possibly looked at the offer price (£1.27 instead of £2.55) and halved the offer price to 64p.
I found this on the Farmfoods thread on the Food Shopping board - posted 5/2/2016:
I don't think you ever going to get Branston Beans 4 pack for £1 ever again. I think you need to up your maximum price to 30-33p.

    I've didn't see them for £1 for 4 in 2015

The reduced chicken wasn't cooked in the hour before it was reduced. It's probably been sitting in the warming cabinet unsold for hours maybe since the Sunday morning. Then once you've removed it from the warming cabinet and put it your trolley and transported it home it's been sitting at the danger temperature for quite a long time. I really wouldn't trust that a chicken stored at such conditions would be okay to eat 4 days later. Monday and Tuesday yes but I'd cook the rest on Tuesday night or bin it.

If some portions were frozen then defrosting it slowly is not safe. Frozen cooked meat should be reheated to 70 degrees and eaten immediately. Using some of the left overs in a cooked dish would be better than using them in a sandwich.

The ham that your granny cooked was probably a dry cured ham with very little water content to help bacteria grow which do last quite a long time. Uncut they can last for months. There is also less meat exposed to the air and granny was cutting a little off each day exposing a new part of the ham to air. Any bacteria that begins to form on the new bit will be cut off the next day and won't be at dangerous levels.

Feral Moon there's a Home Bargains in Kings Lynn on the outskirts not sure where in Norfolk you are. We use it on our way to Hunstanton when we go every October for 2 weeks.
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)

Bought 2 years worth at 64p check hotukdeals

Normal price is 2.55, normal offer price is 1.27 every few weeks.
