What can you eat on £3 a week

I was just watching something on catch up TV and thought I heard the female say to the male that he has to live on £3 a week for his lunch....Is that even possible?

I can get bread for approx 9p if I wait until gone 8pm in a certain shop
Noodles 20p
Reduced fruit and veg gone 6pm in a different certain shop
I would have to drink tap water.

I don't think it’s possible even with reduced items it would take me over £3.

I guess the plus side is that I wouldn’t have to plan what I’m going to eat as every night would be a mystery.

    lunch for 5 days..

It depends what she's got in the house already. If there's butter/marg in the fridge it would help. If you're starting completely from scratch then £3 would be really difficult, unless you grow your own veg and take in soups every day maybe?

Everyday or just 5 days a week at work? I used to do a 50p a day lunch:
    1 roll (£1 for 12)
Ham for roll (£2 for ~12 sandwiches worth)
1 bag of crisps (Can usually find 12 for £1 somewhere)
1 chocolate bar/biscuit/whatever was on offer (Say ~12 for £1 again)
    An apple/pear/some piece of fruit (6 for £1, so 12 for £2)

So that makes about £6 for 12 days lunches. You have to look out for the offers and stock up when they're on but doable :)

£3/week for lunch, I am assuming that's work lunches, would be 60p/day.

Easily doable, more doable if you've actually got £6 for two weeks as the starter items that'll last weeks would take up a lot of the £3.

But, limiting it to three £1 coins and nothing in the cupboard:

    Loaf of bread 40p
    5 bananas at 12p each, 60p
    Jar of cheapo jam 30p
    5 cheap cup a soups 40p

So for under £1.70 you can have something (jam sandwich, cup a soup and a banana).

After that there are loads of other alternatives/choices.

    Boiled eggs are 7p each.
Marg is 70p, but once you've got that it lasts weeks.
    Sandwiches: Cheese, cheese/egg, cheese/tomato, cheese/cucumber, cheese/pickle.

Pasta's cheap too. Boil pasta, splash a bit of mayo/salad cream at it.
Potato salad would be the same.

If you've a microwave, then 1/4 of a bag of oven chips nuked is 12p.
    :)

Fish finger sandwich, ~35p using 3 quality fish fingers.

Cheap jar of peanut butter and one of those bananas is 2 rounds of banana/peanut butter sandwiches, for about 40p all in.

Also just another thought - carrots and celery are cheap. If you chop up the carrots, stick an ice cube in with them to stop them drying out before lunchtime. Dried fruit/nuts is also a good one, get some little boxes to cart them around in. Sainsbury's basics dry fruit mix works out about 6p a portion.

Homemade soup? Leek and potato is cheap and delicious. I take a flask of homemade lentil soup for lunch, sometimes have some left overs from dinner the night before. Can't see it costing me more than £3 a week give or take a few pennies.

    Pasta - 20p per 500g
Tinned chopped tomatoes or passatta - 40p-60p
    Courgette - 50p
    Carrots - 40p
    Mixed herbs/basil - 60p
    2/3 onions - 30-40p

Cooking oil (assumed already have) - I'm also assuming that they have pans, utensils and some form of cooker. Trying to prepare cheap meals from a travelodge would be tricky.

For under £3 whip up a really simple tomato veg pasta sauce. Cook a big batch of pasta, combine, put in containers for the week (freeze if necessary and put in fridge to defrost night before)

That's even buying several things that can be reused, and allowing for large portion sizes. After the first week there'd be money left over to buy some chilli flakes!

It's all well and good saying pot noodle or soup. But you need something that has some kind of nutritional value if it was to be long term. You're getting something filling and getting one/two portions of fruit and veg.
