  • I recently found out about a first time buyer's grant from my local council. Wasn't mentioned to me by my solicitor or the estate agents - it just happened to come up in conversation with a friend of a friend. Two weeks later and they have provisionally agreed to pay towards several things. The criteria for the works is unsafe / dangerous. Might be worth checking out...

I have recently moved into a housing association property and took my sky TV with me when i moved. A sky engineer came to install a new sky plus hd box but told me he could not install a dish because a communal dish was present. However the communal dish is in a bad state of disrepair and not working ( i receive no satellite signal I have contacted the housing association for permission to install my own dish and was told NO! They said they would repair the communal one. 4 weeks later still no signal and still no repair. Everytime I call I just get fobbed of with some excuse and told they are very sorry. PLEASE can anyone help me. I just wanna watch tv.I am slowly going stir crazy, even the standard 5 channels come and go when they please. HELP!!!!!!!

One person has little power - time to introduce yourself to the neighbours and find out what they make of having poor TV reception?
Properly organised a hand full of people can make more fuss than an army of individuals.

    thanks
    Nice to save.
  • Hi, I'm not sure if this particular company is genuine or not, but I do know from a previous neighbour who was very, VERY shady, that he used to put DG units in THE WRONG WAY ROUND so that the workers could then break in at a later date. So whether it's true or not, it's probably worth getting a friend with uPVC knowledge or reputable firm to have a look to double check.
    Hope that helps :)
  • How do I apply for a grant to help with refurbishing the home which I am buying? I am looking to buy the house out right and upon arrival to the house I will be unemployed and reliant on benefits.

  • hi,myself and wife live in a council house with no driveway,i have a mother who has trouble walking and can manage about 50 yds before stopping for a rest, she has her own house (private) with drive that my father put in some years ago,he did most of if not all the daily chore's like cooking etc as mother is unstable on her feet but he died last year,we would like to have her round more often for dinner etc but we have no drive or path from our house to the road(cul-de-sac) so there is the kerb for her to overcome, then grass which is fine in summer but slippery when wet in winter.
is there a grant available for us to put a driveway in or would it only apply to my mother's address.
  • As this page has info on the Anglian water efficiency check, I thought I'd point out that Swindon residents can benefit from a similar scheme:
Save Water Swindon is also offering you the chance to give your home a free water saving makeover.

You can do it yourself by picking up one of our free water saving kits which includes easy to install water saving devices that are right for your home.

Or, you can register to have one of our trained fitters come to your home and do it for you. In a 50-minute visit they'll conduct a water audit and decide which products are best for your home and then install them for you - all for free!

  • I have had double glazing fitted throughout my home, some windows around seven years ago. I have had problems with these windows since fitted, wind blowing through mainly but even though I contacted the company, I was not succesful in having them rectify the problems. I have recently discovered that on my main bay window, the frame is about two inches short from the wall and I can see daylight!! The company has gone into liquidation and I cannot get any recompense. Is there any grants/helpout there that could help me??
  • Has anyone heard of a new scheme where you are given the option to buy a 5.6kw solar panel for your roof for £500??? The only catches I can see are the same as the ones you buy for £12,000 but sell the energy back to the company but I'm not toally sure. All I know at the moment is that you have to have it on your roof for 25 years but the panel will be serviced for free and you can have free electricity for your home (but not hot water) day and night (as it has a battery to store the energy used in the day). At the moment it sounds too good to be true but it does seem everyone's a winner - the electric company as they get free spare electric from your solar panel and the home owner because you get free electricity. Anyone know anything more?

Does anyone know what they mean by 5.6kw?? Would it run a washing machine, tumble drier and dishwasher as well as the normal stuff in the house for example or will I have to be more careful of what I put on and when?

    Thanks everyone!:j
