In my view there are really only two types of Psychics:-

    The Fraudulent or the Deluded.
However those that start out as the former type often turn into the latter type and those that start out as the latter type often turn into the former type - or become a mixture of both.

There used to be plenty of useful and sensible advice on a site called badpsychics.com, but I'm not sure if this site is still operational.

Most psychics these days tend to have very small-print statements to the effect that their services are provided "for entertainment purposes only", so the chances of any comeback are quite remote.

I despise those who consciously prey on the vulnerable, desperate and the grieving.

There are techniques for doing readings. Take the accident prediction, we all have accidents all the time, most of them are minor but she said your Dad would recover so any minor slip, trip or paper cut over the coming weeks could be taken to prove the prediction had come true. If he happened to have a more major accident, that would also be seen as a true prediction. Win, win.

If it could be done, it would be proven and verifiable under scientific conditions.

Like James Randi has been trying to prove since at least the 1970s. No credible proof yet though. Can't imagine why.

Bit like time-travel really; if it is a possibility, far in the future, then it's already happened and someone has been back to visit...

I have an open mind - but it remains less open where out-and-out nutjobs and conspiracy theorists are concerned.

The one I saw privately was fantastic £40 an hour ended up being nearly 2 she recorded the whole thing on a tape for me. Within minutes of walking in she told me things that only I knew...

Why would anyone pay £40 to be told things that they already know?!

Well is obviously not to tell you the past......A good one will tell you for validation purposes... The first one I saw told me accurate specific things from my past, things that hadn't been talked about for years, none of which were normal day to day occurrences.

I actually went at age 18 just for a laugh, I had never ever given two thoughts to them before so when someone told me that she had a good rep it made no difference. I was blown away by her and she helped me to move on from part of my past.

Pretty much what I was about to say cheers

The one I saw really helped validate a few things for me especially surrounding my dads death. It was very sudden he took the dog for a walk and never came back. It left me with a lot of questions and feelings of confusion that she was able to help elevate and as I was 20 when I first went it helped me move into my adult years a lot happier

As I said before each to their own but for me personally I have found the ones that I have been too that were good helped a lot.

In fact it's nearly a year since my mum passed away and I am looking to go back to the 1st medium that I saw (she is extremely well regarded in psychic circles) as I feel it's the right time and I know that it gives me peace that I can't get elsewhere but that's my own personal feeling

It's part of the routine to appear to add credibility. Out of interest, where was this information supposed to be coming from? Did she claim to be reading your mind or speaking to a dead spirit? If she told you something you think she could not have known, what was it?

I am pleased you felt it helped you as grief is a terrible thing, but it worries me a lot that psychics are making money out of telling things that are unlikely to be true to someone who has recently lost a loved one. Especially if they claim to be in contact with the dead, that must be dreadful when the person needs to surely come to terms that the person has gone.

I always find it odd that those who have passed on to the "Spirit World" never seem able to simply state their name and where they lived but rather always indulge in bizarre guessing games with their loved ones still on earth of "the name sounds something like" or "I died of something to do with my upper torso" or "I was keen on the outdoors" variety in order to identify themselves

I agree, and I am so glad that you found peace after your sad loss, Faith177. Maybe there are some people out there with a genuine "gift".

But I do know of someone in similar circumstances where the "psychic" informed the bereaved that her late grandfather, far from being the good man everyone remembered him to be, had actually cheated on his late wife with two long-term affairs. It was devastating and, of course, no-one remained to defend him or his reputation.

Some apologists add the caveat that "a true psychic doesn't pass on bad news". But Nearlyold is right - often the "details" given are so vague and all-encompassing that they might mean anything to anyone.

I should be happy to be definitively proved wrong, with evidence of the type suggested by Randi in his (still-standing) Million-Dollar-Challenge. But I don't think it will happen in my lifetime. x
