Just let people pass .. They are not racing you ..Just trying to get by.

I know half of you posting are adamant you are in the right ..And I am not here to argue with you .Just explaining that the driver behind you is only a problem because you are in there way ..slow down at a decent straight stretch rather than using that as a place to speed up and the problem driver will be gone.

I think the tailgating problem is often caused by people thinking that others are in their way.

    It's not their way.

I often have to travel on unfamiliar roads and will stop if I feel I am holding up traffic; if I can't, I slow on a straight stretch, but still have experienced some idiots who flash or sound their horns or make rude signs at me. They obviously feel it is their way.

  • the speed limit is the maximum you should be driving not the minimum. Drive at a speed you feel comfortable at, there's no law against driving 40 in a 50 zone, of that I am sure.

People have been prosecuted for driving too slowly. I'm aware of a case locally where a woman was driving too slowly on the motorway and was compelled to take more lessons and resit the test. There was another case (not locally) of a successful prosecution for doing 17mph in a 30mph limit a few years ago.

In the former case we had a spokeswoman for BRAKE on the telly saying how terrible it was as slower was always safer, she didn't seem able to comprehend how someone doing 10-20mph on a free flowing motorway could be dangerous, never mind driving straddling the inside lane and hard shoulder, which she was also doing.

Lack of confidence in a car is just as dangerous as too much.

Sunday drivers are a good example.

I always remember my driving instructor telling me that the speed limit is just that, a limit. It won't always be suitable for the road you're on. Especially where dark, country roads with sharp bends are concerned. Obviously, if you know the road well and feel comfortable driving at 60mph then fair enough but you will only put yourself and others at risk if you drive at 60 when you don't know the road and aren't able to judge bends correctly. Also, country roads often don't allow space to pull over and let others past (certainly none of the ones where I live anyway!).

Yes, I'm driving 35 years and have never hit a cyclist, deer, sheep or (a hazard in our area in years gone by) a horse drawn caravan.

Still doesn't mean you have to right to police my driving just because you feel you need to go slower than me.

    I totally agree with you.

Unfortunately on here there are the forum police who cannot see beyond strict rules and regulations. Good luck when the bad ones come along.

The speed limits are in place allowing for the absolute worst drivers out there. Outside of built up areas where 30mph is the difference between life and death if a child ran out for example, the speed limits are for those not capable of thinking for themselves.

Driving home on saturday, we were behind someone doing less than 15 mph in a 30 zone for several miles. It was a main road with no bends at all, decent weather, lots of street lights etc. I can understand sometimes people will drive a bit under the speed limit, but in perfect conditions driving at ~14mph is ridiculous. DH still maintained a decent gap, even though the driver behind seemed to like our bumper a little too much. As soon as there was a safe opportunity DH tried to overtake, at which point the driver immediately sped up to over 40 mph to try to prevent us from overtaking.

When we did finally overtake, he went back to driving ridiculously slow again.

Why would people drive like that? If you want to drive 15 mph below the speed limit, fine, but refusing to let anyone overtake you is dangerous
