if it is deemed dangerous you can be fined on any road. Though the paperwork is probably more hassle than it is worth.

My OH drives me crazy doing 20MPH on a 30mph stretch with nothing in front and cars building up behind up.. I just realised though he might not actually know what the limit is there.. there are no signs on that stretch.

Maybe you both should read the highway code again to establish what it means if there are no signs on that stretch of road.

That person may have been a doctor on an urgent call.

It may have been soon to be father driving the mum to be to hospital for an imminent birth.

It is not for you to determine what is a safe speed for someone else. Slow down and let them pass.

Presumably you are talking about a two lane road so room for two cars to pass.

We live on a 40 odd mile single track road. We travel the road almost daily . Knowing the road we can drive faster than the many tourist who clog the road up despite the notices telling them to use passing places to allow faster vehicles to pass safely.

When I was learning to drive my instructor told me that speed limits are only a guide. Example just because the speed limit says 50 that doesn't mean you have to make sure you're driving at that speed. He actually said it means up to 50.

I don't know if any instructors on here can confirm if that's true or not, but that's what I was told.

Mine said (I learnt over the summer) "It's a limit, not a target."
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.

They are trying to achieve the speed limit.

You can be fined if you are driving too slow and deemed to pose a risk to other road users.

The speed limit is a maximum, not a minimum, there are loads of situations where its not appropriate or safe to go at the full limit. Even in ideal conditions, good drivers vary their speed as needed for bends, hazards etc.

Or it could be one of my exes just being an utter ***** to everybody else on the road because of a false sense of superiority and a constant desire to scare people off 'his' rightful place in front of everybody.

If I were driving and could pull over, I'd do so - but if not, fine - stick your lights on full beam and that just means I'll drive even slower because I can't see as well.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

If the call is urgent enough that the doctor needs to break the speed limit and tailgate, he should have advised his patient to call an ambulance.

Driving fast enough to risk an accident is a terrible idea with a woman in labour in the car, again, crashing isn't going to help any of them.

I agree that the correct thing to do is to pull over at the earliest opportunity and let them pass, but not because they have a right to drive dangerously, because its safer for them to be far in front driving dangerously than immediately behind. These drivers aren't only risking their own safety which would be bad enough, but other people's too.

A wet road on a dark night full of sharp bends has no place for anyone to over take. The driver in front driving faster than it is safe for them to do so, will cause far more trauma to the Dr and expectant parents if they crash.

As others have said - the speed limit is the absolute limit in ideal conditions.

Just let people pass .. They are not racing you ..Just trying to get by.

I know half of you posting are adamant you are in the right ..And I am not here to argue with you .Just explaining that the driver behind you is only a problem because you are in there way ..slow down at a decent straight stretch rather than using that as a place to speed up and the problem driver will be gone.

If you stop priding yourself on how right you always are and realise that the other driver just drives faster then you can just drive how you wish when they are just red lights a mile ahead .

But the whole point is we are talking about a situation where there is no straight stretch of road.... and the driver behind in this situation is a problem because they are flashing lights and tailgating - extremely dangerous at any time but especially on a wet road full of sharp bends.

I've just been on an unlit road in the dark that I don't know well, with sharp bends. The speed limit is 50 and I was going about 40, but the car behind me was pushing and flashing lights. Obviously when anyone knows a road well it's easier. Can anyone understand what these people are trying to achieve?

An early death & not always just theirs but an innocent bystanders or motorists.
Where I live, we know the roads very well, they sound very similar to the road you were on, but we always drive to the road/weather conditions, so many deer/sheep to come upon around a blind corner or leap out at you, patches of black ice or compacted snow where you don't expect it., branches/trees down in the road, not to mention the potholes caused by the snow.
I try not to drive at night now unless I really have to, the last deer incident spooked me, it suddenly jumped over a fence & landed half in/out of the back of my husbands pickup, we all needed new underwear that night, deer included.
