Being an optimist doesn't prevent you from being sensible and having a contingency in place should disaster strike though.

As someone who has had to pick up the pieces when things have gone wrong for patients, I hope it never happens to you.

What is your problem, you know nothing about whether I have any contingencies in place or not, now please refrain from trying to have the last word about my health which you know nothing about.

Final word, though no doubt you will come back with some inane comment.

Cajef - I use my glasses when I get home as its nice to take lenses out and let my eyes 'breathe' a bit.

Nedmundo - yes they have rechecked the prescription and the distance part is correct, but that has made the near sight worse (fuzzy/swimmy) - hence the problem. Only 'fix' is weaker lenses (i.e. much like I already own) or varifocal (which I said at the first appointment I didn't want to try).

Lastly - and off topic a little, I think the high water content soft lenses can be worn even longer because they let more air to your eyes. may be wrong but think that's what I heard

ps. meant to say that the OCCS (opticians ombudsman) have agreed to look into the matter for me so I will be able to let you know down the line what comes from that. I am not hopeful but feel strongly enough to make the point for future.

also the opticians have added salt to the wound by telling me I have a deadline of 4 February in which to accept the lenses swap or they will return the glasses that I cannot see out of and keep the money. these people need to go on a customer relations refresher course I feel :(

OK - in which case it depends how undercorrected your previous specs were and what your distance vision is with them. Out of curiosity, why are you so reluctant to try Varis?

Also, water content is related to the older generation of plastic soft lenses, where they tried to increase oxygen transmission with increased water in the material, but this results in a thicker lens, more deposits and a propensity to drying out. Silicone hydrogels are where its at these day as these let loads more oxygen through to the corneas.

Even then, it's still sensible not to wear them all day and have a back-up, no matter how lucky you may be :cheesy:

  • Ok, but I am not an optician.

OP has been short sighted for some time. Hence the distance prescription. Contact lenses can correct this problem, and give good near vision coverage. This is because having myopia, us caused by the focusing of objects on the retina. Lenses correct this.

As you get older, your lens in your eyes get more stiff, and gradually when you are forty, your near vision deteriorates. Hence you need near vision glasses, ir prescription as well

Op cannot make their mind up what prescription they want.

I have a weaker prescription that allows me to carry on with my near work. For driving I use a stronger prescription.

Ufortunately OP. There is no cure fir this situation, you gave to adapt to live with it. I do.

  • sorry, yes, my lenses are air optix toric for astigmatism so I think they are probably hydrogels actually. don't want to try varifocals because so many people I speak to say they don't get on with them.

and I am not undecided about what prescription I want at all. I was quite happy with how I was managing originally, ie contacts during the day with reading glasses at work, and my weaker glasses for chilling out at home. opticians told me I could have improved glasses at home and I went along with that trusting in professionals, but they were wrong because what they have supplied makes my whole world swim - even sitting down. I am very used to managing both my distance and near sight and have done so for years, but the opticians took money for useless glasses. this is nothing to do with being undecided, its to do with being taken for a ride
