I buy Aldi's large Flame eggs for Easter each year. This year there are even 3 varieties, the new one with with wrapped mini bars for kids. My girls always have the praline filled ones, great value and nice chocolates.

Rather disappointed with a pork shoulder joint I bought from Aldi last week. I'm wondering whether they've changed supplier as previous ones have always been delicious. This was a larger joint to the usual £2.99 ones and cost around £4.

I roasted it the other day for a good couple of hours (after a 30 min hot blast to crisp up the skin) and when I carved some off I found it be very fatty and still rather tough. A lot of fat had drained into the bottom of the roasting tin too.

Today, I decided to make pulled pork with the remainder of the joint so removed the skin and put in a foil covered dish with a little water, expecting it to need approx 40 mins before shredding and adding hot reggae reggae sauce to it.

Well, it took over two hours in the oven (bearing in mind this was half the original joint so approx 800g) to become soft enough to shred. I've never had a pork joint take so long to cook before, especially a shoulder joint.

I'll be extremely wary of buying another one :(

While we're on the subject of biscuits, Aldi's half coated fruit and nut cookies are extremely good, too. I seem to have demolished half a packet earlier today... wonder how that happened?!

To be fair, half the pack is what.... 4 cookies? In which case, I admire your self-restraint!!!

They really are good though. I like the choc-chip version too. I've used them as little gifts before because they are that. damn. good.
  • Now I know this is not not officially a grocery item but I did buy them from Aldi! A box of 6 wine glasses I spotted in the reduced section for £5.99. They are rather nice glasses, especially at £1 each. I shall be testing one tonight with some Aldi Pinot Grigio. Cheers!

Animals vary - even Waitrose occasionally produce the odd disappointing joint.

I'd write it off to experience and try another one. :)

'Tassimo' compatible pods at £2 a pack would be a winner.
